Notifications

Older MIUIs had a strange design approach that left out the quick reply feature. Granted, that changed with MIUI 9. And users can now send responses without leaving a notification.

Still, Android Oreo goes further. It introduces touch-enabled notification pop-ups. These iOS-style enhancements allow peeping at the pop-ups’ content by simply long pressing an app’s icon. Also, app developers may now include quick actions in the pop-ups. Stuff like Reply, Forward, Mark, and so on.

Apps get notification dots in Android 8. But, depending on what home screen service you use, this may not be something new to you. BlackBerry Launcher, for instance (yes, it’s an MIUI 9-compatible app – you can find it here), uses sparks. Besides, the default Mi-tools gives you notification bubbles – counter badges included.

Form Auto-fill

Most of us use password managers to store login credentials securely. When a service asks for a username/password, we just copy from the manager and paste into a form.

The worst thing about this is that the sensitive data remains on the phone’s clipboard. And worryingly, any other app can access your passwords quickly from there.

Android 8 addresses this need with its Auto-fill Framework. It works like this:

• When you first enter data into a form, Oreo will ask for your permission to save it;
• If you consent, it will be filling out those details in subsequent cases automatically.

Screen Aspect Ratios

If you didn’t know, MIUI has an aspect ratio limit for what apps can display. Ideally, the ROM allows a maximum ratio of up to 1.86:1. This means that anything on your screen should have a length that’s, at most, as twice long as the width – and vice-versa.

Android 8 abandons this requirement in favor of a no-limit ratio. And it’s actually a welcome development. Because OEMs are now experimenting with non-standard displays, the aspect ratio limit was a considerable hindrance.

Adaptive Icons

It seems that the trend nowadays is to make UI elements as interactive and fun as possible.

MIUI 9, for instance, didn’t skimp on animations. And thanks to its under-the-hood optimizations, they are snappy and fluid. The ROM comes with new-look icons too.

Oreo also has new icon designs. The difference is that its approach seeks to make app icons even more interactive. They are now adaptive. When you flip through the home screen, for instance, they could bob or wobble to draw your attention to something.

While that may not be a world-changing feature – there’s no telling what creative devs could end up doing with it.

How to install MIUI 9 Global Beta ROM:

1. Launch the website of Xiaomi phones and download the file named, “Recovery build of MIUI 9 ROM for Redmi”. Store this file to the internal storage of your phone.
2. Go to tools, updater, and select the menu button. Go through the options and select Update Package. Open the MIUI 9 Global beta zip file transferred on your internal storage of the phone. It usually takes 5 minutes to decrypt the files. Ensure that your Redmi phone’s internet is on when you follow this process.
3. After the decryption, the updater app will automatically prompt a confirmation message that it will now install the MIUI 9 Beta ROM on your phone. Confirm the option and accept the fact that it will erase everything from your phone before updating.
4. The process of installation won’t take longer than 5 minutes. Your handset must restart by itself once it is completed.

Upcoming MIUI 9 ROM – Latest News, Supported Devices and Features

Xiaomi’s MIUI 9 ROM will be based on Android 7.0 Nougat and will include upgraded user interface, “picture-in-picture” (PiP) mode, screen split option and many other interesting features and customization options. The official release is planned in the begging – mid August. The most possible release date is 16 august, 2017.

MIUI 9 will focus on smoothness, stability and functionality. We thing it’s definitely worth waiting for these updates! In addition, it has been reported that users will get to choose and setup unique icons for different applications. Another great feature (the one I’m actually really interested in) is a inbuilt screen recording application.

MIUI 9 Closed Beta Test

It has been reported that Xiaomi has started a closed beta test of MIUI 9 on a limited number of devices. Basically it is now available for MIUI developers and official beta-testers team. This closed beta test will last until the end of the month.

MIUI 9 Screenshots

Recently some screenshots of MIUI 9 appeared on the web. Many news sources thought this is new look of upcoming interface. However, official Xiaomi representatives made a statement, that this is wrong information, and these aren’t the screenshots of MIUI 9. As far as the information goes, these were just a “possible” design of one of the available MIUI 9 themes. The thing you should know, is that this is not how MIUI 9 will look like.

MIUI 9 Supported Phones

It’s assumed that MIUI 9 update will be available for many of currently released Xiaomi phones. First of all, new update will be available on Xiaomi Mi 6, Mi 5 (Mi 5S & Mi 5S Plus), Mi 5C, Mi Mix & Mi Max, Mi Pad 3, Redmi 4X, Redmi Note 4. Other device models will get the MIUI 9 update a little bit later.
