Not actually… As far as I understand in the Step 5 we’ve unlocked the bootloader and you can actually stop here without installing TWRP (or maybe you want to install it later). In the Step 7, we boot into fastboot to flash TWRP Custom Recovery. Maybe someone here can make it a little bit clearer.

I am confused about why I would need to Fastboot the phone twice as shown in steps 4 and 7;

“4) Boot your Mi 5X in fastboot mode and connect to PC via USB cable.
5) Now you can unlock the bootloader.
6) To flash TWRP Custom Recovery on your Mi 5X phone, first of all you’ll need to download TWRP and copy downloaded twrp .img file to the Mi Unlock folder.
7) Boot your phone in fastboot mode, go to Mi Unlock folder and press “Shift” + “Right mouse” buttons at the same time, then select “Open command window here”.”

What is going on here? What are you trying to tell us? Is 5 essentially 7?

anybody can suggest how to receive confirmation link after registering with email address ? without phone number ? from the desktop ?- cant request bootloader unlock without it.
