Information given by Tord is incorrect.
Numerous VPN’s are working with no issues.
I am posting this from China and connected via Astrill VPN.
It works on my mac, pc, ipad, work phone and on my Xiaomi 5X.

As I go to Developer options > Mi Unlock status and click on Add account and device, and tap “Add account and device”, the error come up. it says “its a mistake please check API file” in Chinese.
So I could not unlock Mi 5X, are there any solution of this issue ?

I riceived this morning an MI 5X: already bricked with a tool suggested in XiaomiToday.it
Missing 250$
The phone was recevied with no access to fastboot or recovery; perhaps modified by the chinese seller geekbuying.
Now is no more responsive to power button. Dead.

First and last xiaomi product for me

Thanks for the tip but it seems like no VPN into china is working right now. Tried noumerous ones in the last days and the one in the thread provided is no exception. Same thing with paid services like Astrill etc. Now my question was really if there is anyone who acctually has managed to unlock an MI 5x yet.

The issue could be probably related to WiFi, ISP or Chinese Firewall.

Have requested boot loader unlock but not received any confirmation SMS, though I got the first SMS to submit the request. Now I end up at the download page for the unlock app when returning to the same page so something must be ongoing.

Issue is though that one should go to settings->additional settings->developer options->Mi unlock status and add account to device which generates an error 10008 which is reported by other people but without any solution.

Is there someone who has actually managed to unlock a MI 5x?
