]]> If you operate either a Xiomi Redmi 6 or 6 A which are also known as cereus (Redmi 6) and cactus (Redmi 6A), then you’re in for some great news!

What is GSI?

GSI is an acronym for Generic System Image. The tag Generic is used to reveal that software images can be uploaded on any Treble-enabled device (both Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A are enabled) regardless of the manufacturer.

You can easily find a list of devices supported for Android Pie 9.0 GSI. Full list of all GSI supported ROMs can be found here.

Just the other day, the ROM development community fully boosted Custom ROM development thanks to the Project treble input.

Custom Android Firmware for Redmi 6A (cactus)

We’ll start with listing few Custom ROMs and then we’ll continue with GSI firmware.

Download AEX 5.8 for Redmi 6A

Developed by Utkarsh.

Very clean and fast Custom ROM with a lot of positive reviews. Very similar to AOSP, but comes with a lot of additional features and settings.

How to install AEX 5.8?

  1. Boot into TWRP Custom Recovery.
  2. Wipe Data, Dalvik, System, and Cache.
  3. Install the downloaded ROM .zip archive.
  4. Install vendor file through TWRP:
  5. Optionally proceed with GAPPS installation.
  6. Install Magisk.
  7. Reboot into TWRP once again.
  8. Install additional SMS and Call fix.
  9. Reboot once again and use Magisk to install DolbyAtmos fix.
  10. Final reboot and you can continue using your freshly installed firmware.

]]> Here’s some information on how you can use Android Pay application on your Xiaomi phone with root and unlocked bootloader with Custom ROM installed (Lineage & Resurrection Remix ROMs in this case).

Install Android Pay on Xiaomi with Custom ROM (Lineage & Resurrection Remix)

This tutorial was tested on Mi5 and Mi5s Plus devices with Lineage OS or RR custom ROM installed.

  1. Open Google Play and download Magisk Manager.
  2. Open Magisk Manager > click on the top red cross icon, tap “Download and install” > “Install” > “Reboot”.
  3. Install “Android Pay”.
  4. Open “Magisk Manager” (you should see two green arrows at this point). Open settings, find and enable “Magisk Hide” option. Exit settings and tap on the third grey icon, if it turns to green, that means everything was done correctly. You can now open Android Pay and add cards, everything should work fine now.

If case you’ve stuck with some issues, you may want to try this solution:

  • If you can’t install Magisk using the Google Play or .apk file, then try flashing this .zip archive via TWRP Custom Recovery: Magisk-v12.0.zip
  • In case you’ve successfully installed Magisk, but SafetyNet is still couldn’t be enabled or Android Pay is still not working, then try installing this fix via TWRP: xiaomi-safetynet-fix-v1.8.1.zip
  • If something goes wrong and you want to uninstall Magisk from your device completely, then download and install Magisk uninstaller patch via TWRP.

Pay attention, that after updating your custom ROM to a newest version, Magisk will be deleted, so you’ll need to repeat the same steps again to make Android Pay available to work. Also you can install the Magisk-v12.0.zip right after updating your current ROM.

Important Information: In case of “Error 7”: On the latest Ressurection Remix ROM starting from 21.05, you must update the firmware to DEV MIUI 14.04 and not newest. Otherwise you’ll get an error in TWRP related to firmware version. Here’s a patch you may want to download: firmware_7_5_11.zip

Lineage OS for Mi 5S Plus

Very good custom ROM. Very fast and quite stable performance. Everything is working without issues. Among the shortcomings very low battery life (around 6-7 hours) and bad camera app.
