Pay attention! We have information that this guide won’t work on some specific devices and you can’t use it, otherwise you’ll have a hardbricked device in result. You must check the ARB (anti roll back) status first of all.

How to downgrade from MIUI 10 to MIUI 9

It’s a well known fact already, that on some specific device models you can’t downgrade from MIUI 10 to an older version, because Xiaomi recently decided to stop this and introduced Anti Roll-Back (ARB) ban. This is also related to Android 8 and the latest changes in Google security policies. Probably we will see the Anti Roll-Back will be injected in every other Android 8 or newer devices, regardless of manufacturer.

As for the Xiaomi smartphones, now we know that devices which are released after the 2nd half of 2017 might be affected by the ARB ban. Which basically means if you have a MIUI 10 Android 8 (or newer) device, then you can’t roll back and if you continue with the guide you’ll have hardbricked phone in result. Here you can check the list of devices with ARB enabled for sure and instruction on how to check the ARB status on your phone.

Now you’ve checked the ARB status on your device and ready to continue. First of all, let’s get prepared. If you decided to roll back MIUI firmware version by yourself, you must be completely prepared. Now we will list everything what should be done in the beginning.

Actually, there’s nothing special or hard. We will need to format the device to its original state, remove the latest MIUI version and then flash the required MIUI version by standard methods: with “three-dots”, fastboot or Recovery.

Charge your device up to 70-90 percentages and backup all required data, since the roll back will completely wipe your device memory. Don’t save the backup on phone memory, save it on your PC or any other safe place!

After you’ve done with the full backup, we will restore the device to factory settings. You can find that in the “Settings” menu. Go the “Settings” > Scroll down and find “Advanced Settings” > “Backup and Restore” and find “Reset to factory settings”. Your mobile phone will reboot and restore to the blank “factory” state.

In some cases, this reset can downgrade your device back to the previous MIUI version, in some cases its not. Especially if you’ve been using the new ROM for quite a while. If the factory reset didn’t helped, then continue to the next step.

This method won’t work in most cases, but you can still try and test for yourself. In this step we will use Recovery mode . There are two ways to do this. The first way is to open “Settings” > look for “System Update” > tap on “three-dots” icon in the upper corner and find “Reboot into recovery”. If you don’t have such option in the menu, turn off your phone, wait for a minute, then press and hold “Volume Up” and “Power” buttons at the same time until Recovery mode starts. Search for “Wipe Data” and proceed with wipe.

Now you’ll need to find the correct ROM version for your device. This is simple, search on our website or go to Official MIUI page, find your device model and download required version. Pay attention that you can’t flash ROM from different device model!

After you’ve downloaded the required ROM version, rename it into update.zip and copy to phone internal memory.

1. Open “Settings” menu.
2. Find “About” > “System Update”.
3. Tap on “Three Dots” icon and select “Locate MIUI ROM”.
4. And find previously downloaded ROM version.
5. Phone ask for reboot, confirm.
6. If you’re lucky enough the previous ROM version will be installed, but sadly in most cases you’ll see the error: “Unable to upgrade to previous version”.

It’s time to try different methods. To use the following two methods below, you must have unlocked bootloader on your device.

How to roll back MIUI version using MIUI Beta

Pay attention that in the middle of summer, 2019, the MIUI beta firmware release process changed quite a lot. Basically, they stopped releasing developer ROM versions for a lot of different Xiaomi smartphone models (including the newest ones). Mostly, this applies to Global ROM versions, China MIUI beta will still work.

So, if you have Stable ROM version installed, you can do the following: download corresponding developer ROM version, install it via the Update menu, connect to wifi and do the basic setup of your device and then download the required Stable ROM version and install in via “Update” menu once again. If this method didn’t worked as well, then continue to the last one.

How To Downgrade MIUI Version using Fastboot (MiFlash)

Once again, a quick reminder that you must have unlocked bootloader to continue with this method. If you don’t know what is Fastboot and never used MiFlash, we can highly recommend you to read more guides and gather more information to avoid any confusion. Also you must have Mi Flash installed on your PC.

1. Download FastBoot ROM version for your phone.
2. Extract the downloaded archive twice and move the files to new folder on your C:\ drive.
3. Connect your device to PC via USB 2.0 cable.
4. Start MiFlash tool.
5. Locate downloaded ROM files.
6. Find your device in MiFlash and tick “Clean All” option.
7. Start flashing.
8. Wait until the process is fully finished.
9. Your phone will reboot.
10. If everything was done correctly, your phone now have the required ROM version installed.

Tutorial on how to install MIUI on Xiaomi A2

Required files and tools:

Xiaomi Flash Tool: MiFlash20180528.zip

Latest Official ROM for Mi A2: Download here

MIUI ROM: Download here

Fastboot & EDL: fastboot_edl.rar

TWRP (Recommended version): Download here

After you’ve downloaded and installed all required tools, you can continue with the tutorial. Remember to backup your personal data.

1. Extract the A2 firmware.
2. Extract the MIUI firmware from Xiaomi 6X version.
3. Open the folder with unpacked A2 files, go to “images” folder and copy the following files abl.elf, prog_emmc_firehose_Sdm660_ddr.elf, prog_emmc_firehose_Sdm660_lite.elf to the “images” folder with MIUI firmware files.

Pay attention, that you should write down the version of A2 original ROM you’ve copied these 3 files previously, it will be needed to rollback to MIUI.

Next thing that you’ll need to do is disable driver digital signature verification on your Windows PC. After it’s been disabled you must install the correct drivers from MiFlash. To do this, open Xiaomi Flash Tool as administrator, go to “Driver” and then press “Install”.

1. Unlock the bootloader and all crucial partitions on your device.
2. Start MiFlash tool as administrator.
3. Locate the folder with MIUI ROM files.
4. Start your device in EDL mode.
   1. Reboot into fastboot mode.
   2. Connect to PC via USB cable.
   3. Unpack the fastboot_edl.rar archive to “C:\” drive, open command prompt and open the “edl.cmd” file.
   4. Phone screen should turn off and your device should be now identified as “Qualcomm 9008” in device manager.
5. Now in MiFlash press “refresh”, select “clean all” and press “flash” to start flashing. Wait until installation process is completed.
6. Next we need to install TWRP. Start your phone in fastboot mode, copy previously downloaded “twrp-3.2.1-test-wayne.img” TWRP image file to the same folder with fastboot files and enter the following line in terminal: fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.2.1-test-wayne.img
7. Now find any suitable MIUI localized multilingual ROM (xiaomi.eu for example), open the .zip archive with it and search for “firmware-update” folder. Remove all files in there except, BTFM.bin, cmnlib.mbn, cmnlib64.mbn, devcfg.mbn, dspso.bin, NON_HLOS.bin, splash.img.
8. Save the archive and copy to phone memory while keeping TWRP on.
9. Install the MIUI localized ROM version, after the ROM is fully installed, wipe the “dalvik”, “cache” and “data” partitions.
10. Congratulations! You’ve now have Mi A2 with MIUI installed.

You might see a message, that data partition is encrypted, cancel the message, go to “Wipe” menu and format “data” partition.

Install MIUI ROM on your phone with Dual Boot

Please pay attention! We are not responsible for any issues with your device. You do everything at your own risk.

First of all you’ll need to download Notepad++ and Android Image Kitchen: Android.Image.Kitchen.v2.7-Win32.zip

1. Grab boot.img file from downloaded MIUI ROM and drag-n-drop to unpackimg.bat file.
2. You’ll see two folders after unpacking “ramdisk” and “split_img”.
3. Use Notepad++ open “default.prop” and add the following lines or change existing ones:

   ro.miui.has_cust_partition=true
   ro.secureboot.devicelock=0
   ro.secure=0
   security.perf_harden=0
   ro.allow.mock.location=0
   ro.adb.secure=0
   ro.debuggable=1
   persist.sys.usb.config=mtp,adb
   persist.service.adb.enable=1
   persist.service.debuggable=1

4. Next open “fstab.qcom” and remove “verify” if you’ve see any:

   /dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/system         /system      ext4    ro,barrier=1,discard                                wait

5. Open “init.rc” and add the following lines to the bottom:

   #service for shelld
   service shelld /system/xbin/shelld
       class main
   
   #service for su
   service su_daemon /system/xbin/su --daemon
       class main
       oneshot

6. In “init.qcom.rc” find “on property:sys.boot_completed=1” line and add the following above it:

   service shelld /system/xbin/shelld
       class main

7. Delete “emmc_appsboot.mbn” file in “firmware-update” folder.
8. Go to “ROMFOLDER\META-INF\com\google\android” and edit “updater-scrypt” file. Delete the following 6 lines:

   package_extract_file("META-INF/com/miui/miui_update", "/cache/miui_update");
   set_metadata("/cache/miui_update", "uid", 0, "gid", 0, "mode", 0555, "capabilities", 0x0);
   run_program("/cache/miui_update");
   delete("/cache/miui_update");
   show_progress(0.600000, 120);
   ui_print("Patching system image unconditionally...");

9. Delete these lines:

   package_extract_file("firmware-update/emmc_appsboot.mbn", "/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/aboot");
   

10. Delete the last one:

    package_extract_file("firmware-update/emmc_appsboot.mbn", "/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/abootbak")

11. And finally delete “miui_update” file from “ROMFOLDER\META-INF\com\miui”.
12. That’s it! We’ve finished editing boot.img file.
13. Now press on “repackimg.bat” to make the new one, the image-new.img file will be created. Rename and replace the original boot.img file in rom folder.
14. Now use WinRar and WinZip to make archive the unpacked rom.
15. The MIUI ROM is now ready to use with TWRP or DualBootPatcher.

Complete guide on flashing Xiaomi Mi6 with MIUI ROM

Flash Xiaomi Mi6 with MiFlash Tool

Flashing with locked bootloader

Use this flashing method if you don’t have official unlock permission from MIUI, or you can’t unlock bootloader on your Xiaomi Mi6 device using the standard method. The difference is that with locked bootloader you need to use EDL (emergency download mode), while with unlocked bootloader you can use fastboot mode.

How to boot Xiaomi Mi6 into EDL Mode

Note that while your device is in EDL mode doesn’t show any signs of life. 

After you’ve booted your Mi6 device in download mode, you should see Qualcomm HS-USB QLoader 9008 in device manager.

Boot Xiaomi Mi6 into EDL with unlocked bootloader

First method: Connect your device to PC and find it in device manager. Open notification bar and tap on “Connected in charging mode”, then select “Transfer files (MTP) mode”. Device manager will update the list of connected devices. Now enable “Developer options”. Go to “Settings” > “About Phone” > and tap seven times on “MIUI version”. After you’ve enabled developer options, go back to settings and select “Advanced settings” > “Developer options”. Enable “USB debugging”. Open command prompt and test if your device connected successfully. In command prompt type:

adb devices

The phone will display “Allow debugging from this computer?” message. Confirm by pressing OK. In the command prompt you’ll see “List of devices attached” and unique device number. Next type:

adb reboot edl

Your device should reboot into download mode. If it simply reboots in system, then this method doesn’t work for you. This is pretty much ok, just continue to another method.

Fastboot method: Boot Xiaomi Mi6 in fastboot mode. Enable “USB debugging” and in command prompt type:

adb reboot bootloader

Your device should reboot into fastboot mode. Another method to boot into fastboot mode is to turn off your device. Press “Power” and “Volume down” button. After you’ve started your device in fastboot mode, type:

fastboot oem edl

Your device will boot in EDL. Remember you should have unlocked bootloader to use this method. If you don’t have unlocked bootloader you can try using engineering cable, but MIUI disabled this method on newest ROM versions.

Download Stable fastboot ROM and unpack into “C:\fastb” or any other folder with similar name. Let’s continue with flashing our Xiaomi Mi6 device. Start MiFlash.exe as administrator and press “Refresh”. COM port number is not very important, but remember to connect your device only to rear USB ports.

In MiFlash press “Select” or “Browse” (in older versions) and locate the folder with downloaded ROM files. Click “Flash” to start flashing. The flashing process should start, it will take around 5 minutes. After flashing is completed you’ll see “The operation is completed successfully” message or similar. Now disconnect your device from PC and hold power button until you’ll see Mi logo. First startup will take longer than usual.

Pay attention! If you’re flashing to Weekly or Developer MIUI ROM, you’ll most probably get hardbrick or bootloop device, engineering (deep flash) cable isn’t working no more, EDL mode also isn’t working, here’s an solution for you:

1. Download Chinese version of Mi PC Suite.
2. Boot your device in Recovery mode (turn off Xiaomi Mi6 and press and hold “Volume up” and “Power” button).
3. You’ll see 3 buttons with Chinese symbols. Press the last one (third) and you’ll device icon.
4. Run Mi PC Suite, connect your device to PC. You should see a pop-up window with one single button. Click on it.
5. Next you’ll see a window with your currently installed ROM version.
6. Now press the first button and select ROM file you want to flash (Important! You can’t flash Global Stable or Developer ROM, you’ll get an error).
7. Download China Stable ROM. Select it.
8. The ROM version will be checked, if everything is fine you’ll see green message, this means everything is ok.
9. Press the first button. On your PC you’ll see a progress bar and 0% (it won’t move). On your mobile device you’ll also see a progress bar.
10. Wait around 10-15 minutes, your device will automatically boots into system.

Flash unlocked bootloader Xiaomi Mi6 with MiFlash

Start Xiaomi Mi6 in fastboot mode.

1. Your Xiaomi Mi6 will be identified in device manager.
2. Download Stable fastboot ROM and unpack into “C:\fastb” or any other folder with similar name.
3. Start MiFlash.exe as administrator and press “Refresh”. Remember to connect your device only to rear USB ports.
4. In MiFlash press “Select” or “Browse” (in older versions) and locate the folder with downloaded ROM files.
5. Click “Flash” to start flashing. The flashing process should start, it will take around 5 minutes.
6. After flashing is completed you’ll see “The operation is completed successfully” message or similar.
7. Now disconnect your device from PC and hold power button until you’ll see Mi logo. First startup will take longer than usual.

Flash Xiaomi Mi6 with Updater app

This is the most convenient and simple method. It does not require unlocked bootloader and ton of drivers and software on your PC. Main disadvantage of this method is that it simply does not always work, and you can’t make backups. Features of this method:

• If you downgrade MIUI ROM version, all personal data will be wiped.
• Update from “Vietnam” ROM version to official MIUI ROM may not work.
• You can’t update from Official China MIUI ROM to Global ROM (and vice versa).
• Bootloader lock state isn’t matter.
• This method may not work on custom or localized ROM versions (supported on xiaomi.eu).

Installation process:

1. Download MIUI ROM .zip file (for recovery) and copy on your phone memory (it’s recommended to download ROM using your phone).
2. Open the “Updater” app.
3. Tap the three dots icon in the top-right corner.
4. Select ROM.
5. Locate downloaded MIUI ROM .zip file.
6. Wait > reboot your device.
7. If you stuck with “Can’t verify update package”, try other flashing methods.

How to flash Xiaomi Mi6 with TWRP Custom Recovery

1. If you’re flashing from one localized ROM to another, you must wipe every partition. Otherwise you’ll most probably stuck with some bugs and errors.
2. Before continue with this tutorial, make all required backups and save them to your PC or other device.
3. Boot into TWRP Custom Recovery.
4. In TWRP main menu select “Wipe” > “Advanced” > Select “Cache, Dalvik Cache, System, Data, Internal Storage” (Do not select other partitions!!!). Swipe to confirm.
5. After wipe is completed, you’ll see “Done” message, go back to TWRP main menu > Reboot > Reboot into recovery.
6. Your device will be completely clean, without any files.
7. Now connect your device to your PC and copy downloaded ROM .zip file for recovery.
8. Disconnect from PC.
9. Now go to “Install” and select ROM .zip file. Remove checkbox against “Check MD5” and swipe to confirm.
10. Wait until installation is completed. You should see “done” message.
11. Wipe “Cache” and “Dalvik”. Wait until “done” is appeared.
12. Reboot into system.
13. First startup will be longer than usual.

How to flash Xiaomi Mi6 with Mi PC Suite

This method is used for flashing the official MIUI ROM with any bootloader lock status. Along the way, Mi PC Suite installs all drivers on your PC if they are not already installed. If you want to flash your Mi6 device through Mi PC Suite in recovery mode, you need to have an official stock recovery on your device. In case you’ve got TWRP Custom Recovery installed on your device, you can always roll back to stock recovery by entering the fastboot command: “fastboot flash recovery recovery.img”. You can find stock recovery .img file in any official .tgz ROM file.

Flashing Mi6 with Mi PC Suite

1. Download and install Chinese version of MiPhoneManager (Mi PC Suite) here or here zhushou.xiaomi.com;
2. Run Mi PC Suite and connect USB cable to your device. Do not connect to PC yet.
3. Update MiPhoneManager if possible.
4. Next you’ll need to select a flashing mode. “Recovery” mode is for locked bootloader, while “fastboot” mode works only on unlocked bootloader. Use volume buttons to select the mode and “Power” button to confirm.
5. Now connect your device to PC.
6. If you’ve chosen a recovery mode you’ll see a window with 4 buttons:
   • Download ROM
   • Select ROM file from PC
   • Factory reset
   • Reboot device
7. If you’ve chosen a fastboot mode:
   1. First field is an device model
   2. Second field: Chinese ROM or Global
   3. Stable or Developer ROM
   4. Check-mark is for full wipe after flashing
   5. Buttons in the bottom: Left button means select ROM file, and right button is to download ROM.

If you flash with recovery mode, you should make factory reset manually. After ROM is flashted enter the recovery mode again and make factory reset (via recovery app or MiPhoneManager).

How to update Mi6 fake MIUI ROM 8.2.0.2 to Beta Global ROM

Here’s a small update for all of those who are waiting for Xiaomi Mi6 Official Global ROM. There’s been a release of Global stable Beta 7.6.1 ROM. But pay attention, that this ROM version was removed from official MIUI website, probably because of some issues. Be careful with this ROM. Difference between MIUI Roms

English / Chinese Stable / China Stable: Official MIUI ROM focused for China, with various applications and services relevant only for China. This version receives regular OTA updates.

Global Stable ROM: Multilingual ROM version, relevant for users outside of China. This ROM comes with inbuilt Google Apps. OTA updates are also included. In comparison to China Stable, volume is decreased on Global Stable.

China Developer ROM: China Developer ROM is the most current and innovative ROM version, as it receives all the innovations and new features first. This ROM is official and released by Xiaomi itself. First of all it is created for advanced users to test new and upcoming features.

Global Developer: Pretty much similar to the China Developer ROM, but has more languages available.

How to install Resurrection Remix on Redmi 4X

How to flash crDroid ROMon Redmi 4X

The Flyme 6 Custom Rom release for Xiaomi Redmi 4X device. Install via TWRP Custom Recovery. Full wipe is required, including phone internal memory wipe. After full wipe, reboot into recovery again and then install this ROM. Otherwise installation will fail. Judging on comments and rates, seems like this is a quite stable ROM version. Some Chinese applications are included, so get ready to delete them. Gapps should be installed separately.

How to unlock bootloader on Xiaomi smartphone after receiving official permission

First thing that you must pay attention to. To unlock bootloader you must have Weekly Developer MIUI ROM version installed on your device. If your MI account is old enough you can try unlock your device on Stable ROM, but this is rarely works.

Link your Xiaomi phone to the Mi account for which you have acquired permission. To avoid “stuck at 50% unlocking” error after logging into your account, do some random actions with this account, for example find your phone on the site i.mi.com.

1. Download and unpack MiFlashUnlock.
2. On the first startup click “Agree”.
3. Sign in with your Mi account.
4. Turn off your device completely.
5. Now start your device in fastboot mode. Press “Power” button and “Volume Down” button at the same time and wait for logo to appear.
6. Connect your device to PC and press “Unlock” button.
7. If all three checkmarks are highlighted you’ve successfully unlocked bootloader on your device.
