Hello, everyone! It’s been a while and I’m pretty sure you’re already very excited after reading the post title. Yes, you can now install and try the latest Android 8 on your Redmi 4x.

The latest Android 8.0.0 ROM for Xiaomi Mi A1 has been released and now available for download. The thing is that the previous Mi A1 root method won’t work on Android 8. But no need for panic, the new working method is already found.

Enable root on Xiaomi Mi A1 Android 8.0.0 ROM

Since all of the current versions of TWRP Custom Recovery won’t work on the Android 8.0 ROM, we will root our Mi A1 without Custom Recovery. Basically, this is just a temporary solution which can be used until TWRP for Android 8 is released, after we will get the working TWRP version, we can use the old rooting method.

Update your phone to Android 8.0.0.

Download modified kernel and copy to phone internal memory: boot.img

Download and install Magisk Manager.

Open Magisk Manager > go to “Install” > “Patch kernel image” > and locate previously copied “boot.img” file on your device.

Kernel image modification process should start.

Now copy patched boot file to PC. By default it would be saved to “/sdcard/MagiskManager/patched_boot.img”.

Start your Mi A1 device in fastboot mode and check the Android 8.0.0 slot by typing the following line in terminal:

fastboot getvar current-slot

Now flash the patched boot image to the corresponding Android 8.0 slot by using the following commands:

fastboot flash boot_a patched_boot.img
OR
fastboot flash boot_b patched_boot.img

Reboot your phone with the following command:

fastboot reboot

Now you’ve enabled root on your Mi A1 with Android 8 ROM.

We’ll update this post as soon as the working version of TWRP Custom Recovery for Android Oreo is released.

How to install TWRP and root Mi A1 with Android 8 Oreo ROM

Pay attention, that there’s a small chance that your device might go bootloop after using the suggested method below, in this case simply flash the stock MIUI kernel on your phone to restore it. If you’ve got this issue, then it means that there’s no working root method for your device yet.

Download TWRP for Xiaomi Mi A1: twrp-tissot-recovery-3.2.1-0.img

Download and copy these files to your mobile phone: Magisk-v15.3.zip and twrp-3.2.1-1-installer-FIXED_By_DroiDMester.zip (download this archive if you want to flash TWRP permanently).

Boot into TWRP by typing the following command and wait until your device boots into TWRP Custom Recovery:

fastboot boot twrp-tissot-recovery-3.2.1-0.img

If you want to root your device without flashing TWRP on your phone, then then click on “Install” in TWRP main menu and flash Magisk-v15.3.zip, then reboot into system.

If you need to flash TWRP permanently, then then click on “Install” in TWRP main menu and flash twrp-3.2.1-1-installer-FIXED_By_DroiDMester.zip, then reboot into recovery and install Magisk-v15.3.zip, reboot into system.

Xiaomi Mi A1 has been equipped with the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chip, 4GB of ram, up to 64 GBs of storage capacity, dual rear cameras (12MP each), and has the Android Nougate 7.0 operating system ― quite an exceptional set of features I must say. These features were also the underlying reason behind its acquisition of interest in Google’s entry level hardware platform.

Xiaomi Mi A1, released in September, was touted to receive the Android Oreo update before the end of the year. Finally, the manufacturers have come good on their promise, and rolled out this update for beta testing. It has a total size of 1104 MBs ― and is set to make Mi A1 one of the first smartphones in its price range to support the Oreo platform.

As of now, The Oreo update is only available for beta testers. However, you can still try out this new update even if you’re not one of these privileged beta testers. We have devised the easiest guide to help you download this update manually on your Xiaomi Mi A1. In just a few simple steps, you’ll have the update ready for testing on your device.

Caution

We strongly suggest you to back up your important data before installing this update on your Mi A1, because any sort of carelessness on your part can lead to loss of data or irreparable damage to your phone due to bricking. Also, make sure that you have at least 60-80 percent charging on your phone before initializing the installation process. Minimum storage space of 4GB is also a prerequisite for this update.

Download Xiaomi Mi A1 Android 8.0 Oreo TWRP backup file

Click on the download link below to download the TWRP backup file, released by XDA developer rameshurfrnd1, which lets you install the Oreo update on your device manually. Here is the link for the backup file.

Android 8.0 Oreo TWRP Backup File | Source: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=74843137&postcount=1

Steps of Installation

After downloading the backup file mentioned above, save it to the following directory.

“TWRP/BACKUPS/df0bdeb70404/[UNOFFICIAL] AOSP OREO – tissot Directory.”

Boot your device into the TWRP mode.

After you’re in the setting menu of the TWRP mode, wipe out the phone’s memory by selecting the Wipe option

Then factory reset your device by swiping the Factory reset option.

Go back to the TWRP settings, and click on restore backup.

Restore the TWRP Oreo backup.

Finally, restart your Smartphone.

Voila! That’s all it takes to beta test this new and most wanted android update. Happy testing my friends!

Google’s product sans font made its debut in the Android 8 (Oreo) release. Besides excelling in legibility and scale, the font is simple and beautiful. And we’ve come to appreciate its form and function after seeing it on Google’s branding. The ubiquitous “G” trademark is one such example.

Download and install Google Product Sans Font for MIUI

Until recently, product sans admirers had only a chance of using it if they owned a Google-phone. But even if you had one, the font doesn’t show in the entire Oreo UI. Pixel 2 devices, for example, use product sans on the lock-screen, settings, and clock apps alone.

Fortunately, modders have found a way of availing product sans to nearly all ROM versions. They extracted the font from Android 8.1 Developer Review and made it usable on firmware, such as:

OEM stock ROMs

Custom ROMs: AOSP-based ROMs, e.g., LineageOS

MIUI ROMs: MIUI Pro, Mi-Globe, Epic ROM, Xiaomi.EU

Stock MIUI: Global/beta MIUI 8/9

As the list shows, if you are an MIUI user: you’re in luck. Using the tools and steps that I will share, you’ll finally be able to revamp your phone’s UI with the product sans font.

How to Install Product Sans Font Using TWRP

The process is quite straightforward if you already have TWRP on your phone.

Note: for Redmi 4X and Mi 6 users who haven’t, you can find helpful guides here and here, respectively.

That said; follow these steps to start using product sans font:

Grab zip file and save it in a location that you will recall quickly: MIUI_TWRP_GoogleSans.zip

Restart your phone and start your TWRP

Click Backup > System > Install

Navigate to the zip file that you saved in step #1 and select it

Flash the file then select Reboot

In the unlikely event that the font doesn’t please you, you could always revert to default font settings.

For that, just head back to your TWRP and click “Restore system.”

How to Install Product Sans Font Without TWRP

Messing with your phone’s boot-loader may not be your style. In that case, you can still enjoy product sans by theming. Here’s how:

Grab this mtz theme file and save it to your phone’s internal memory:

MIUI_GoogleSans.mtz

Open the Theme Editor app for MIUI. (You can install it from Google Play Store.)

In the Editor, click Themes > Import

Choose Internal Storage > MIUI > Theme. Then select the mtz file that you saved in step #1

On completing that, the editor will add product sans to its font list. So, scroll down and select it. Restart your phone to apply the changes.

Take a few minutes to review how the font looks on your apps. If you don’t like it, head back to the MIUI Theme Editor and re-apply the system font settings. Then restart your phone.

Because of a bug, MIUI may struggle to make product sans bold or italicized as needed. In that event, you have no option but to restart the process the TWRP way (as I’ve shown in the previous section.)

Did the installation work for you? Have you experienced any issues? Let’s discuss in the comments section.
