Project Treble partitions your Android device into 2 separate partitions – a system and a vendor. The system partition contains your generic system image. Your vendor partition contains your device specific files needed for booting and running your phone. This separation allows for easy change the system image and users can run their devices on different system images with the same kernel and vendor partition.

All this work is due to efforts from RedmiDevs founding members. They did the full device bring-up.

What is GSI? – GSI means Generic System Image. It is a general system image meant for no particular device. Treble enabled Android devices have a capability to run GSI. For more information and download link for GSI check this link.

Xiaomi Redmi 4A Hardware vs. Treble Implementation

Xiaomi Redmi 4A is an A-only Android device. This means that regarding the GSI images used, you need to get ARM64 and A-only system images.

How to Install Project Treble ROM on Redmi 4A & 5A

Before starting the installation procedure, keep in mind that we are not responsible for bricked devices or corrupted SD cards. You are doing all the steps on your own risk.

Reboot your Android device into Recovery (You can use TWRP or CWM). Here you can download TWRP for Redmi 4A: https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=674106145207489212

Format: System, Data, and Cache.

Install the Treble flashable zip package. Here you can find the direct download link. The zip contains:

Kernel (a boot image)

Custom Partition (a compressed vendor image)

Install the GSI system image you want to use. Here you can find more info on how to flash a generic system image (GSI) on Project Treble supported devices: https://www.xda-developers.com/flash-generic-system-image-project-treble-device/

Reboot your device.

Important Notes

The current minimal (required) firmware version is MIUI 8.3.29 Global Dev. If you are using an older version you may experience installation problems. Here you can download the latest dev package directly from Xiaomi. Flash it prior installing LineageOS. Alternatively, you can download and install one of the newest custom packages containing firmware only. Keep in mind that you are doing this on your own risk.

G-Apps can be flashed on clean installs only.

Formatting data (all user data including the internal storage) is obligatory, if MIUI was previously installed and the Android device was encrypted.

Working Features

VoLTE (AOSP ROMS don’t have the needed patches to get it working. However, most other GSI ROMS have them)

Camera (with and without flashlight)

Audio (Playback and Record)

Telephony (Data and Calls)

Video Playback

Bluetooth

Sensors

Wi-Fi

GPS

Known Bugs

Encryption when coming from a non-treble ROM does not work. That’s why you need to remove encryption when coming from a non-treble ROM.

Wi-Fi Mac Address is randomly generated. You will keep it the same as long as you are on LineageOS.

Sepolicy is permissive.

Version 2.0 Changelog

We now have a 2.0-version available, which is unified with Redmi 5A. Here are the main improvements.

Included new power-off charging animations (it can show percentage)

Updated Camera to the latest CAF tag

Updated Kernel to the latest CAF tag

Fixed call issues over Bluetooth

Updated screen off gestures

Added a full RGB LED

If you are installing crDroid for the first time (or coming from another ROM), make sure you do the following steps.

Hello, guys! In this tutorial we will show you how to restore firmware on bricked or bootloop Xiaomi Redmi 5A (Riva) device. Please pay attention, that if you have Chinese version of Redmi 5A with locked bootloader and Global ROM (*Vietnamese) firmware, you should not update your device, otherwise you’ll get hardbrick in your hands.

Unbrick Redmi 5A with locked bootloader and stock recovery

First of all, you should know which version of Redmi 5A smartphone you have. There are two different versions in the market right now: Global & China.

Download MIUI ROM for Redmi 5A.

Download and install MiPhoneManager: MiInst.exe

Allow MiPhoneManager to install all required drivers on your PC.

Turn off your phone, then press “Volume Up” and “Power” button, release the “Power” button after short vibration signal and keep holding “Volume Up” button, wait until your device starts in MiRecovery. As soon as you see the recovery screen release the “Volume Up”. At this point you should see three buttons. Use volume buttons to navigate in recovery menu and select “Connect with MiAssistant”. Press “Power” to confirm.

Your device will enter MiPCSuite.

Now connect your Redmi 5A device to PC via USB cable.

In “Device manager” you should see “ADB interface”, on the phone screen you’ll see inserted USB cable.

In MiPhoneManager the new window with 3 or 4 buttons should appear. If you see 3 buttons window, then you’ll need to download the MIUI ROM manually (recommended version will be displayed). If you see 4 buttons window, then you can press the first button and ROM will be downloaded and installed automatically.

In case you see a window with 3 buttons only, then press the first button and locate previously downloaded ROM.

If you’ve selected the right ROM version for Redmi 5A, then you’ll see green hieroglyphs. Press the first button once again.

The installation process will start and progress bar will be displayed on your phone screen.

After installation is completed your device will automatically reboot.

I hope that MiPhoneManager steps are clear, but if anyone can provide us with screenshots for this tutorial that would be great. You can contact us by e-mail or use the comments section below.

How to identify version of Redmi 5A – China or Global?

As we previously noticed there are two different versions of Redmi 5A:

Global version: 2 SIM card slots and MicroSD. Comes with multilingual ROM installed.

China version: 1 slot for SIM+MicroSD or SIM+SIM. Comes with China ROM installed which includes Chinese and English languages.

How to flash multilingual MIUI ROM on Chinese Redmi 5A?

Locked bootloader: Basically, there’s no way to install multilingual firmware on locked bootloader. Since Global ROM for MiFlash (fastboot) won’t work for Chinese version of Redmi 5A (leads to bootloop). While Global ROM for stock recovery simply can not be installed.

Unlocked bootloader: So, there’re two ways. You can flash TWRP Custom Recovery and then install any multilingual ROM version for Redmi 5A, xiaomi.eu for example. The second way is to flash Global ROM (fastboot) via MiFlash tool without locking the bootloader (Pay attention, do not use “clean all and lock” mode).

Now you’ll have to wait until the countdown. There’s no way to skip or make the process faster. Do not change Mi-Account or flash different ROM version at this point.

After the required waiting period is over, open the MiUnlock tool once again and repeat steps from 6 to 9. Now you’ll be able to unlock the bootloader finally.

You can check the bootloader lock status by going to “Mi Unlock Status” in the settings menu.

Xiaomi is preparing a new smartphone Redmi 5A. Earlier this phone model appeared under the code name Ulysse, and now its technical sheet has been published. This gadget will become a continuation of Redmi 4A – one of the most popular and fantastic Xiaomi device currently on the market.

Upcoming Xiaomi Redmi 5A Technical Details

Redmi 5A will receive a 5-inch display. The battery with the capacity of 3080 mAh will answer the autonomous work questions. Xiaomi will also equip the smartphone with a 13-megapixel Samsung S5K3L8 camera module, which we have already seen in Redmi 4 and Redmi Note 4 devices.

The remaining technical specifications will include a Snapdragon 430 processor, 2 or 3 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of storage memory. The display resolution will be 1280×720 pixels.

According to unverified information, the Redmi 5A will inherit from its predecessor with a dual SIM slot, LTE support and a 5-megapixel front camera. Judging by the prices for the previous models of the manufacturer, the price for Xiaomi Redmi 5A device will be probably a little more than $100. In the end we should get a very affordable high-end device. Let’s hope that the guys from Xiaomi will not let us down!
