LineageOS is a free aftermarket firmware distribution of Android 8.1 (Oreo). The Android community builds this custom ROM as an Android Open Source Project. Mainly, it is designed to increase the reliability and performance of your Android device. Now, a new release of this ROM is out there for Xiaomi Mi 5s, and here you can find the installation instructions.

Note: You can use LineageOS without having a Google application installed on your Xiaomi Mi 5s.

Download LineageOS 15.1 Android 8 ROM for Mi5S (Capricorn)

LineageOS 15.1 Working Features

Camera (Videos and Photos)

Audio (Record and Playback)

Video Playback

Bluetooth

Sensor

Boots

GPS

Wi-Fi

How to Install LineageOS 15.1

The first step is to Download the latest build. Here is the link https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=234421

The second step is to Download the newest Gapps. Here is the link http://opengapps.org/

Now, Reboot your device to recovery.

Next, Flash the latest build and Gapps

And finally, Reboot your device.

Help and Tips: In some cases, there is a need to force reboot after the Gapps installation is complete, because the unofficial installer is buggy. You can do this by holding the power button and volume down button at the same time. A couple of users reported issues like “broken buttons backlight.” However, the developers already know about this problem. They announced releasing a fix for that soon.

If your device keeps restarting after you enter your Wi-Fi password, you can do the following steps: Download the latest weekly MIUI Global Beta ROM > Installed through TWRP > Booted to OS > Restart back to recovery > Wipe everything > Install LOS 15.0 + Gapps > Booted to OS > Setup your device.

LineageOS includes various hardware-specific codes, the full source code for LineageOS is available for the public. If you are interested in checking it out, here is the link to the official source code https://github.com/LineageOS

Changelog

This version of LineageOS removes the UI blur overlay and unlocks the GPS. It also does not have the uninitialized PMW mode issue from the previous versions. Button swap and key disabler for dumpling are disabled. Also, the pinner service files are updated.

This version of LineageOS improves the Bluetooth performance of your device. Wi-Fi HIDL version 1.1 is enabled, and a default_normal option is added as well. LineageOS 15.1 fixes the corruption due to double start or stop. It also doesn’t contain the unused configs for Bluetooth from the previous versions. There is an option for enabling hardware keys overlay as well.

How to Report Bugs

If you are experiencing bugs on your Xiaomi Mi 5s, you can use logcat right after the problems has occurred. But, make sure you use logcat before the reboot. A logcat report after the reboot is useless. Also, always provide as much info as possible, the more info you will provide the more likely that the bug will be solved and the solving process will be faster.

Final Words

LineageOS 15.1 is still an unofficial release. So, be aware that it may have a couple of bugs if you are using it as your primary ROM. However, feel free to give it a try and don’t be shy to share your experience in the comment section below.

Recently we’ve been reported that some users have issues with not working WiFi on Xiaomi Mi5S. This issue may appear after you’ve flashed Custom ROM on your phone for the first time. Here’s the solution that we’ve recently tested. Hope it will help you to restore WiFi connection on your device as well!

[Solution] Can’t connect to WiFi on Xiaomi Mi5S

For this method you’ll require to have superuser permission enabled on your phone. Will also work on Xiaomi Mi5 with Custom ROM.

The issue is result of a broken MAC-address, which shows in red color in engineering menu.

Install ADB driver on your PC.

Flash your MIUI smartphone.

Enable developer options.

Then go to “Developer options” and enable “USB-debugging”.

Go to the folder with ADB files and press “Shift” + Right Mouse button at empty space, then select “Open command window here”.

Type the following commands in terminal window:

adb devices
adb shell
su
cd /persist/
mv wlan_bt wlan_bt_bak
mv wlan_mac.bin wlan_mac.bak

After this make the factory reset of your phone and use clean MIUI firmware.

WiFi connection should work now.

Original source: https://forum.xda-developers.com/general/help/connect-to-wifi-installing-cm-13-xiaomi-t3532137

Second method:

If the method above didn’t worked for you, try the solution below and then repeat the above steps. This will help to restore the modem after flashing.

Must have unlocked bootloader.

Remove SIM-card before following this method.

What’s required:

Download and install ADB drivers.

Copy NON-HLOS.bin file from the currently installed ROM (you can find it here /firmware-update/NON-HLOS.bin).

Backup modemst1, modemst2, fsg partitions (root is required).

Open command window from the folder with ADB files and type the following commands (backup files will be created in phone memory):

adb shell
su
dd if=/dev/block/sde28 of=/sdcard/modemst1
dd if=/dev/block/sdf3 of=/sdcard/modemst2
dd if=/dev/block/sdf5 of=/sdcard/fsg

Installed SuperSU.

Now let’s start with the tutorial:

Connect your phone to PC.

Flash NON-HLOS.bin file. Copy “NON-HLOS.bin” to the folder with ADB files, open the command window and use the following commands:

fastboot devices
fastboot.exe erase modem
fastboot.exe flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
fastboot.exe reboot

Your phone will reboot. Now wipe the required partitions. Use the following commands:

adb shell
su
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/sde28
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/sdf3
reboot

Your phone will reboots.

Modem should be restored now. To fix not working Wi-Fi you can try to repeat the steps above.

Flash Global Stable ROM on Xiaomi Mi 5S with locked bootloader

First you’ll need to install a China Developer ROM using the “Updater” app.

Next download Global ROM for Mi5S to your PC.

Install all required PC drivers and install Chinese Mi PC Suite version (You may find it here http://zhushou.xiaomi.com/).

Boot into recovery, you should see an image with phone and cable.

Connect your device to PC, in Mi PC Suite new window should open. Press the first button and locate the Global ROM archive you’ve downloaded previously and press the top button once again.

Installation process should start. It will take around 20 minutes.

As soon as the phone goes restart, remove the cable and disconnect device from PC.
