Unlock bootloader and install TWRP Custom Recovery.

Download required version of MultiROM and boot into TWRP.

Wipe “Dalvik”, “Cache” and “Data”.

Install MultiROM.

Reboot into system.

How to use MIUI updater app to flash ROM on Xiaomi Mi5

Download required ROM version and copy downloaded file to PC via USB-cable.

Go to “Update” menu and tap on three dots icon on the upper right corner.

Select the folder with downloaded ROM .zip archive.

Installation process should start.

Pay attention! No need to unpack .zip archive. It’s required that you flash only Global ROM to Global ROM and China ROM only flash to newer China ROM version, otherwise you’ll get a bootloop on your phone!

How to flash Xiaomi Mi5 from Global Stable ROM to Global Developer (locked bootloader)

If you’ve got locked bootloader and Global Stable MIUI ROM installed on your Xiaomi Mi5 phone, then to use EDL mode and further bootloader unlock you’ll need to flash to official MIUI weekly developer ROM version. The easiest way to do this is to download the latest developer ROM version for recovery, then copy downloaded ROM to “downloaded_rom” folder, open “Updater” application on your phone and select the downloaded ROM.

How to fix stuck at 50% bootloader unlock issue on Xiaomi Mi5?

If you stuck with 50% error while unlocking the bootloader on your phone, this issue is most probably related to Mi Account or ROM version you’re using. It’s required that you sign in into your Mi Account on your phone. Also you may try to change region to China, this also helps sometimes.

How to downgrade Mi5 from CyanogenMod back to official MIUI ROM

Wipe “Data” partition, then wipe “system”, “data”, “cache” and “dalvik” (pay attention, all personal data will be deleted during this process).

After wipe reboot into TWRP and flash required ROM version.

After installation, wipe “Dalvik” and “Cache”, next reboot in system. First startup may take around 10-15 minutes.

Otherwise you may use fastboot method with full wipe, but in the result TWRP will be removed and you’ll have to reinstall it.

How to make Xiaomi Mi5 full backup without root?

Go to “Settings” > “Additional” > “Backup and Restore” > “Local backup”. This is the most simple way to do backup.

Why SuperSU isn’t working for all applications?

Here’s what might cause this issue:

SuperSU isn’t installed carefully. Try to reinstall SuperSU.

Otherwise apps may not be added to launch at startup or aren’t running.

How to boot Xiaomi Mi5 into Recovery if the screen doesn’t work?

Here’s how you can enter recovery mode on your Mi5 phone in case the screen is not working. Use terminal window and enter these commands:

adb shell
su
reboot recovery

What to do if TWRP asks for password?

You’ll need to make “data” partition format or go to “data/system” and remove these files: “gatekeeper.password.key”, “gatekeeper.pattern.key”, “locksettings.db”, “locksettings.db-shm”, “locksettings.db-wal”.

How to fix Google Now on Xiaomi Mi5

Here’s a solution you may try if the Google Now is not working on your Mi5 phone. First of all you’ll need to have root on your phone. Use Lucky Patcher of other similar software to make “Launcher3” a system application.

In this post you’ll find a complete tutorial on how to flash official or localized custom MIUI ROM on Xiaomi Mi 5 device without unlocking the bootloader. We will be using MiFlash Tool for this purpose. Unlike device with unlocked bootloader, the flash process of locked device is make use of EDL mode, not fastboot.

In the latest MIUI ROM’s, Xiaomi has closed the EDL (Download mode). So, to follow this tutorial you must have installed 7.2.13.0 (or previous) ROM. In case you’ve got a newer ROM version installed on your device, then you’ll need to request unlock permission and use another instruction on how to flash Xiaomi Mi5 with unlocked bootloader.

Otherwise, there’s also another method on how to enter EDL mode on Xiaomi Mi5, for this you’ll need to get Engineering Cable (or make it by yourself).

Flashing ROM on locked bootloader Xiaomi Mi 5 with MiFlash

Ok, so first you’ll need to check what ROM version is currently installed on your device. If you’ve got 7.2.13.0 or older, then continue to follow the steps below:

First of all make sure you’ve got all drivers installed on your PC. On Windows 8 & 10 disable driver signature verification (here’s the tutorial).

Install Xiaomi USB Drivers, XiaoMiFlash and ADB drivers and tools. It’s recommended to use the latest version of MiFlash Tool.

Download required fastboot ROM (do not confuse it with the recovery ROM version) from en.miui.com, and unpack downloaded ROM.

Now move the folder with unpacked ROM files to C:\ drive.

Take your device and enable developer options. Go to developer options and enable “USB Debugging” (simply use search on our site if you don’t know how to enable developer options on Xiaomi phones).

Boot in EDL mode. Turn off your device and connect to PC. Open folder with ADB files and open command window here (press “shift” and right mouse click on empty space, select “Open command window here”. Type “adb devices” to check if device is connected. In case everything is ok, we use another command to boot into EDL mode: “adb reboot edl”.

At this point, your phone should reboot into EDL (download) mode.

Let’s flash our Mi5 phone.

Run MiFlash.exe as administrator and press “Refresh” button.

You should some port number, COM3 or COM10 for example.

In case you see a yellow signal, then update installed drivers manually.

Next, in MiFlash press “Select” or “Browse” and locate the folder with unpacked ROM files.

In the bottom select “clean all” or “flash all” option. This will lead to clean ROM installation and deletion of all data.

Press “Flash” to start ROM installation. You should see a progress bar at this point. Flashing takes around 5-7 minutes. If everything was successful you’ll see a “The operation is completed successfully” message on the screen.

That’s it. The phone doesn’t automatically reboots. Disconnect it from PC and start by pressing the “Power” button. First startup will take around 5-7 minutes.

In case you stuck with some errors:

You’re using old version of MiFlash, try installing a newer version.

Try unpacking ROM again.

Drivers aren’t installed.

In case of hardbricked Mi5 device you may try boot into the EDL mode through fastboot:

Boot your Mi5 device in fastboot mode (turn off > press “Power” and “Volume Down” buttons and wait for fastboot logo to appear on the screen).

Connect your device to PC.

Open folder with ADB files and open command window here (press “shift” and right mouse click on empty space, select “Open command window here”. Type “fastboot devices” to check if device is connected.

If everything is ok, you’ll see a unique device number.

Now enter “fastboot oem edl“.

Your device will boot into EDL mode and you can now proceed with MiFlash ROM flashing.

In continuing the topic about on how to root Xiaomi Mi 5 (find previous related post here), here’s another method you may want to try. Pay attention that this method will work only if you have unlocked bootloader.

Remove encryption and Root Xiaomi Mi5 Device

First of all, make sure you’ve installed all the required and working adb and fastboot tools on your PC.

Download PRO-SuperSU-v2.67.zip and copy to the same folder with adb and fastboot tools.

Download latest version of TWRP Custom Recovery, rename it to recovery.img if required, and move this file to the same folder with adb files. (Skip this step if you’ve already TWRP Custom Recovery installed on your device).

Boot your device in fastboot mode (turn off, press and hold “Volume Down” + “Power” buttons until you’ll see a fastboot logo, and then release both buttons).

Boot into TWRP by typing in Command Prompt:

fastboot boot recovery.img

In TWRP Custom Recovery ignore “data encrypted” message and mount system partition for read and write.

Copy .zip file with SuperSU to the phone by typing:

adb push PRO-SuperSU-v2.67.zip /cache

Install the .zip archive with TWRP (find it in /cache directory).

Reboot into system.

That’s it!

You’ll be able to receive OTA updates and after each update you’ll need to repeat the same steps again to root your Mi5 device.

If your Windows 10 PC have been updated to 1607 build, you may probably have some issues with installed drivers. It automatically installs Kedacom USB Devices > Android Boodloader Interface, that isn’t suitable for Xiaomi Mi5 and Xiaomi Mi6 devices. Continue reading to find simple solution on how to delete and replace Kedacom USB Device Driver with the right one.

How to get rid of Kedacom USB Device Driver

Start your Windows 10 PC in test mode. Disconnect from the internet. Open “Device manager”.

Boot your device in fastboot mode.

In device manager, try deleting Kedacom USB Devices > Android Boodloader Interface.

Delete Kedacom USB Devices until you’ll see “Other devices” > “Android”. If your device isn’t found anyhow, try reconnect it via USB cable.

Now when you see “Android” device with question mark, update with xiaomi_usb_driver folder, you’ve downloaded previously. Download here: xiaomi_usb_driver.rar (don’t forget to unpack this archive).

If you’re not fast enough to update the driver, reboot your device in fastboot mode again and try updating the drivers more quickly.

In the end you should see “Android Phone > Android ADB Interface” in device manager.

Now you can flash your device. Do not connect to the network or exit the test mode, otherwise Kedacom driver will be installed once again. On some systems the “Android Phone > Android ADB Interface” can be saved.

If any of you, guys, have some ideas about how to fix this issue, please share your thoughts in the comments!
