How to flash Custom ROM on Mi Mix 2 with TWRP Custom Recovery

Let’s assume you’ve already unlocked bootloader and successfully installed TWRP on your Mi Mix 2 device. Now you’ve selected Custom ROM you want to try and ready to proceed with installation:

Download ROM you want to flash.
- Select and download the Google Apps (optionally).
Copy downloaded ROM .zip archive and other patches and additional tools to phone internal memory.
Boot into TWRP Custom Recovery to backup your data and wipe all required partitions.
1. In TWRP main menu tap on “Backup” and proceed with system backup.
2. Tap “Wipe” and select the following partitions: Dalvik/ART Cache, System, Cache & Data.
3. Swipe to confirm wiping.
Go back to TWRP main menu and select “Install”.
Locate downloaded .zip archive and follow the instructions on screen to flash ROM files.
1. Optionally you can install all additional files like Gapps and Magisk archives. Pay attention that if you’re going to install Gapps, you must do it before the first boot into system.
2. If you need to have root enabled on LineageOS based ROM then install addonsu application for arm64, otherwise use any other method you can find in different sources.
After ROM installation is finished, select “Reboot” > “Reboot into system” in the TWRP main menu.

How to Root, Install TWRP and Flash Mi Mix 2

This is a how-to article that will guide you to Root, Install TWRP and Flash custom firmware (ROM) on your Mi Mix 2. Here we covered, in details, all the steps needed to make your Mi Mix Rock. Now, let’s begin.

Before starting the procedure, make sure you have an unlocked-bootloader device. If you do not know how to check that or how to unlock your bootloader, here is a step-by-step guide for you: How To Unlock Bootloader On Xiaomi Mi Mix 2.

Once you have your bootloader unlocked, you can jump into the following section.

Flashing Custom ROM on Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is easy!

Install the TWRP (Custom) Recovery

Having Custom Recovery (TWRP) on your device is a must-have tool for rooting your Android device and installing all kind mods or ROMs (firmwares). Here is how to do that.

First, enter Fastboot Mode on your Mi device, by holding together Volume Down + Power.
Download the twrp-3.2.1-0-chrin.img file from the following link. Then store it in a dedicated folder on your computer.
Open the folder where you have stored the twrp.img file. Now, launch a command window in there. You can do that by pressing Shift + Right Click on an empty white space inside the folder. Then choose Open Command Window Here or Open PowerShell Window Here.
In the command window type the following terminal command line:
fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.2.1-0-chiron.img

Note: Do not restart your phone. In opposite the original Xiaomi recovery might overwrite your custom TWRP recovery.

Boot your Mi device into Recovery Mode (3 possible ways).
1. Enter the following terminal command in the command line:

fastboot boot twrp-3.2.1-0-chiron.img

1. Hold down together Volume Up + Power until the Mi logo shows up. Then, release Power but keep pressing Volume Up until you see the recovery.
2. Hold down together Volume Up + Volume Down + Power until you see the recovery screen.

Root Your Mi Mix 2

Once you have TWRP installed, rooting your Mi device is a piece of cake. Just follow the steps below.

First, download the latest Magisk from the following link.
Store the Magisk file you just downloaded into your phone memory (internal memory or SD card).
Boot your device into Recovery Mode (see the step 5 from the previous section).
While in the TWRP interface, navigate to the location where you stored the Magisk file.
Flash the Magisk file.
Restart your Mi device.

Flash Custom Firmware on Mi Mix 2

Now, when you have root access on your Mi device, you can install pretty much any custom firmware (ROM) you want. The installation procedure is the same. Here it is in detailed steps.

First, download the ROM (custom firmware) you want to flash. Make sure you choose one that is for your specific Mi device (in your case for Mi Mix 2). Here are some of the most popular ROMS.
1. Lineage OS – download here.
  Note: In case you lose the root access, and you want to keep it after installing Lineage OS, download the addonus-15.1-arm64-signed.zip file from the following link. After you install the ROM flash addonus-15.1-arm64-signed.zip using TWRP, and you will get the root access.
2. AICP – download here.
3. OMNI – download here.
  Note: In case you lose the root access, and you want to keep it after installing AICP or OMNI ROMs, flash the Magisk file again using TWRP (as you did in the Rooting section from above).
Now, download Google Apps.
Select the right Platform and Android version of your ROM as well as the variant you want to use. Then click the download button, and store the downloaded file into your phone memory.
Enter Recovery Mode (check the step 5 from the previous section if you do not know how to do that).
While in the TWRP interface, wipe the following: Dalvin / Art Cache, Data, Cache. (DO NOT wipe Internal Storage).
Now, go back to the main TWRP screen and flash the ROM you previously downloaded.
Once the installation finishes, flash the Google Apps file you downloaded before.
If you want to keep the root access, flash addonus-15.1-arm64-signed.zip (in case you installed Lineage OS) or the Magisk file (in case you installed another ROM).
Reboot your Mi device and enjoy your new custom ROM.

How to Unlock Bootloader on Xiaomi Mi Mix 2

This guide will show you how to unlock Bootloader on Xiaomi Mi Mix 2. If you follow the steps below, you shouldn’t face any problems. The procedure explained above is tested on multiple Mi Mix 2 devices, and every time it worked perfectly. During the testings, we used a computer running Windows 10.

However, keep in mind that I am not responsible if anything happens to your device, and you perform this process at your own risk. A good practice is to back up all your important data before you proceed. Also, make sure that your phone battery is at least 80%.

Steps to unlocking Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 (Chiron)

First, disable signature enforcement in your Windows operating system. If you do not know how to do that, check the following link.
Now, install ADB and Fastboot tools with drivers on your Windows. For more information on how to do that you can check the following link.
Next, enable Developer Operations on your device. Go to Settings > About Phone > MIUI version. Then, click on MIUI version seven times to activate the feature. Once it is activated, go to Settings > Additional Settings > Developer Options. Check the boxes “OEM unlocking“ and “USB debugging.”
Check if your Bootloader is locked.
- Once you got ADB and Fastboot installed on your computer, enter into Fastboot Mode on your Android device. (Hold Volume Down + Power and connect your Android device to your computer via USB cable, preferably the original one).
- Navigate to the folder where you have installed ADB and Fastboot. Then, open command window inside that folder (Shift + Right Click on an empty space into the folder, and select Open Command Window Here or Open PowerShell Window Here).
Now, enter the following command in the CMD window:
```
fastboot devices
```
If you do not see your Android device type the following line:
```
fastboot oem device-info
```

Now, you will get info about your bootloader. If it is locked, you will get the following (or similar) message:

(bootloader) Device tampered: false
(bootloader) Device unlocked: false
(bootloader) Device critical unlocked: false
(bootloader) Charger screen enabled: false
(bootloader) Display panel:
OKAY [ 0.058s]
finished. total time: 0.063s

If you have an unlocked bootloader, you’ll get the following (or similar) message:

(bootloader) Device tampered: false
(bootloader) Device unlocked: true
(bootloader) Device critical unlocked: true

OKAY [ 0.053s]

Requesting Permission from Xiaomi to unlock your Bootloader

First, create a Mi Account (if you haven’t done it already). You can do int on the following link.
Then, sign in to Xiaomi and apply for bootloader unlocking here.
Note: When requesting the bootloader unlock you have to say the reason for doing that. Example: When I bought my Xiaomi phone it was running a custom (fake) ROM. I would like to install an original Xiaomi ROM. Please approve my request for unlocking the bootloader.
Now, you need to wait for the permission. Usually, they approve the requests for 24 hours (That is what the majority of users are reporting). However, there are some rare cases when the waiting time is up to 10 days. If your request is approved, you will get a message similar to this one:
“You’ve been granted the permission to unlock your device (Mi Account xxxx). Download Mi Unlock Tool At http://en.miui.com/unlock“

Sync your Mi Account with your Mi Device

Go to Settings > Additional Settings > Developer Options > Mi Unlock status and check “Add account and device.”
If for any reason you cannot connect your Mi Account to your device, try one of the following fixes.
Install the FlyVPN app on your device. Connect to one of the Chinese servers. Then, try to connect your Mi Account to your device.
Get the Developer Version firmware for Xiaomi Mi Mix 2. You can download it on the following link.
Transfer the firmware file into the internal memory of your device.
Go to Settings > About Phone > System Update. In the upper right corner, you can see three dots. Click them and click on “Choose update package.”
Then click on “File Manager” and select the Developer Version package that you’ve downloaded before. Click OK to install the firmware. Once the installation finishes, try to connect your Mi account to the device.

Unlocking the Bootloader – Finally!

First, get the Mi Unlock tool. You can download it here.
Enter Fastboot Mode on your Mi device. (Hold down together Volume Down + Power and connect the device to your computer using USB cable, preferably the original one.
Launch the Mi Unlock tool
Type in your email and your password of your Mi account.
While your device is connected to your computer, start the procedure.
Follow the Mi Unlock tool instructions.
Once the procedure finishes, restart your device.

Note: In rare cases, users get a message saying “You can unlock your device after 72 hours” or something similar, you have to wait for that time to pass.

However, if you are following the steps above, and if you are patient enough you will definitely get your bootloader unlocked.

How to flash Global MIUI ROM on Mi Mix 2

In this post I’m going to show you the most easiest way on how to install latest MIUI Global ROM on your Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 China Stable without the need to unlock the bootloader. I’m pretty sure this is a working method, which required you to download Mi PC Suite and use MiAssistant. Let’s get straight to the tutorial.

Flash Global ROM on Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 with locked booloader

Charge your device to 100%.
Then OTA update your device to latest China MIUI ROM version using the “Updater” application.
Enable “Developer options”, then go to “Settings” > “Additional settings” > “Developer options” and enable “USB Debugging”.
Download the latest MIUI Global ROM for Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 to your PC.
Install Chinese version of Mi PC Suite and update it to the latest version.
Now we will flash the MIUI Global ROM:
1. Boot your phone in recovery mode. Turn your phone off, then press “Volume Up” and “Power” buttons at the same time, hold both buttons until Mi logo shows on the screen, then release “Power” button and keep holding “Volume Up”.
2. In the recovery menu select “Connect with MiAssistant”.
3. Connect your phone to PC via USB-cable.
4. In the Mi PC Suite the new window should appear, press the first button and locate previously downloaded Global ROM.
5. Progress bar will be displayed on the phone screen. Flashing usually takes around 15-20 minutes. After installation is completed, your phone will automatically reboot.

If you phone stuck on Mi logo and system can’t be loaded, then boot into recovery mode once again (*Turn your phone off, then press “Volume Up” and “Power” buttons at the same time, hold both buttons until Mi logo shows on the screen, then release “Power” button and keep holding “Volume Up”.) Select “Connect with MiAssistant” once again and connect your phone to PC. In the Mi PC Suite press the second button and then select the button with orange hieroglyphs, this will wipe phone internal memory. Wait until installation is completed and phone reboots into system. You can now proceed using the Global MIUI ROM on your Mi Mix 2 device.
