Restore Bootlooped Xiaomi Mi8 and Redmi 5 Plus

So, let’s begin and try to fix the bootloop Mi 8 with locked bootloader. The common symptoms are “2009” & “2006” errors when trying to flash your phone in Mi PC Suite.

Here’s the list of all requirements:

  • Clear understanding of what you’re going to do.
  • XiaoMiTool
  • 1 hour of time.

After everything is ready, you can continue with the following steps:

  1. Install downloaded XMT software.
  2. Now we’ll need to manually open C:\XiaoMi\XiaoMiTool\FastFlash as Administrator.
  3. Wait until all drivers are installed.
  4. Restore all settings to default on your phone and select “Connect with Mi Assistant”.
  5. Now we’ll need to setup XiaomiTool correctly: In the first field select the right ROM: Global or China. Everything else set to “NONE”.
  6. Connect your phone to PC and wait until it is identified in XMT software.
  7. Now everything should go automatically. XMT tool will download all required files, after that the progress bar should appear on the screen. In the progress bar stops read the solution below.
  8. Wait until your phone reboots and OS starts. Now you can unlock the bootloader and install any of the ROM version you want.

If you’re seeing that there’s a an incredibly large amount of minutes left until the installation process is finished, just reboot the tool, the installation will proceed from the last file where it stopped.

]]> Hello, guys! In this post I want to share with you our experience on we’ve successfully installed latest China Developer MIUI10 ROM on Xiaomi Mi8 device. Before starting with this guide make sure you’ve Xiaomi USB drivers installed on your PC, they can be downloaded by the link below.

Installing China MIUI 10 ROM on Mi 8 (dipper)

Now let’s get more specific about the firmware and flashing process itself. First of all I’ll give the very simple instruction on how to flash China Developer MIUI10 ROM Beta on Mi8 with locked bootloader, as additional to this method the bootloader unlock wait time will be reduced to 120 hours. Please pay attention that this method will remove all personal data from your phone.

It is forbidden to flash Global MIUI ROM on Chinese version of Xiaomi Mi8 with locked bootloader. Chinese device with locked bootloader and Global ROM will be turned into brick. 

  1. Download official MIUI10 China Beta ROM from this link.
  2. Copy downloaded archive to phone internal memory, you can use “downloaded_rom” or create any other folder.
  3. Go to “Settings” > “About phone” > “System update” and click on the three dots icon in the right upper corner > “Choose update package” and locate previously downloaded ROM archive.
  4. Wait until installation is completed.
  5. Your phone will automatically reboots.

If the above method didn’t worked for you, let’s try the more complicated solution:

  1. Make sure you’ve Xiaomi USB Driver installed: xiaomi_usb_driver.rar
  2. Let’s imagine that you’ve just bought your device and you have China Stable MIUI 9.5 ROM installed on your device.
  3. Sync your Mi Account with device in developer options.
  4. Request official unlock permission, download MiUnlock and unlock the bootloader on oyur phone. All personal data will be deleted.
  5. Download ADB and install on your PC.
  6. Download TWRP Custom Recovery for Mi8. We will use the TWRP to make complete backup of your system.
  7. Drop twrp.img to the folder with adb files, then start your device in fastboot mode and enter the following commands in the right order: 
    fastboot devices
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
fastboot boot twrp.img
  8. Backup your current system and copy backup files to PC.
  9. Go to “Wipe” menu and wipe every partition except “Persist” and “OTG”. Highly recommended to format “Data” partition by typing “YES”.
  10. Reboot into Recovery. Do not “Wipe” persist partition at this point, otherwise you’ll get a hardbricked device. If you still did it, then there’s an easy solution. Extract downloaded ROM and find stock “persist.img” file, move to phone internal memory and flash it using TWRP via “Install image” menu.
  11. Cope downloaded China Developer ROM to phone internal memory and install via TWRP.
  12. Proceed with the system setup after you’ve rebooted into system.

So now you’ve China Developer ROM installed with working OTA updates. Recently Xiaomi.eu also released their version based on the latest China Developer MIUI10 ROM version, you can use it as well.

How to flash Xiaomi Mi8 using TWRP, Fastboot or MiFlash

Everything you do with your phone, you do your own risk! You take all responsibility for the bricked device and other possible issues! Before you start flashing, make sure battery charged by at least 50%. All the instructions below are for the unlocked bootloader.

  • Start your device and make sure USB-debug is enabled.
  • You’ll need to unlock the bootloader. Please find the detailed tutorial here. You must wait 360 hours and there’s no method on how to skip the waiting period.

Install TWRP Custom Recovery and flash Mi8

  1. Install required drivers and adb tools.
  2. Extract archive with adb tools on “C:\” drive.
  3. Download TWRP version you want to install from the links above.
  4. Copy rename downloaded file to “twrp.img” and move it to the folder with “adb” files.
  5. Start your phone in fastboot mode.
  6. Start “adb” and connect your device to PC while it is in fastboot mode.
  7. In the terminal enter the following command: 
    fastboot devices
  8. You’ll see unique device number, if it doesn’t show up, make sure you’ve all required drivers are installed correctly.
  9. Now enter the following line: 
    fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
  10. After installation is completed, type the following command and your device will automatically reboot into TWRP: 
    fastboot boot twrp.img
  11. In TWRP main menu tap on “Reboot” > “Recovery”, your phone will reboot into TWRP once again, this is required, so that TWRP won’t be lost after you boot into system.
  12. That’s it!

Pay attention!

  • If you’ve “OEARUFA” firmware installed, when your device start to boot and TWRP text is displayed, remove the USB cable!
  • Allow system partition modifications if TWRP asks on the start.

Flashing Xiaomi Mi8 with TWRP Custom Recovery

This tutorial is intended for those who wants to install multilingual or any other Custom ROM .zip archive for the first time. If you already have custom ROM installed and want to update it to the newest version, then it’s not required to do all wipes and data format, just wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache, then just follow the tutorial after the step 5. If you’ve installing ROM from other developer, then it’s required to wipe “system” partition and format data.

  1. Boot into TWRP Custom Recovery.
  2. Go to “Wipe” menu > “Advanced Wipe” and select System, Dalvik/ART Cache, Cache, Data, Internal Storage partitions > Swipe to confirm wipe. Go back to main menu. Don’t do “wipe persist”!
  3. Go to “Wipe” > “Format Data” > “Yes”; Pay attention that after this step all files from phone internal memory are going to be deleted, please make sure you’ve make all required backups.
  4. Reboot TWRP by going to “Reboot” > “Recovery”.
  5. Connect your device to PC, go to “Mount” partition and copy required ROM archive to phone internal memory.
  6. Now go open “Install” menu, select ROM archive (you can include mods, gapps and other tweaks here as well and they’re going to be installed in the order, simply press “Add more zips”).
  7. Swipe to confirm flashing and wait until installation is fully completed.
  8. If you get a lot of folders with different names, then reboot into recovery, go to “Wipe” > “Internal storage” > “Recovery” > “Reboot into recovery”.
  9. Now we can finally boot into the system. Go to “Reboot” and select “System”.
  10. First startup may take quite a lot of time.

After the first startup you can install Magisk app to enable root on your device and then use Google Pay or other similar apps.

How to flash Xiaomi Mi8 in fastboot mode

  1. Download and install adb/fastboot drivers.
  2. Extract archive with adb tools on “C:\” drive.
  3. Download official MIUI ROM for MiFlash / Fastboot and extract downloaded archive to the same folder with adb files. Make sure you’ve unpacked the downloaded archive twice, so that you’ll get “images” folder in the folder with adb files.
  4. Boot your device in fastboot mode and connect to PC via USB cable.
  5. Start “flash_all.bat”, wait until your device reboot and then remove USB cable. If you want to flash ROM and lock the bootloader, then use “flash_all_lock.bat” file.
    • If “flash_all.bat” file doesn’t work and terminal window is closed immediately, read the following information:
    • Press “Win+R” and type “cmd” in the opened windows, press “Enter”.
    • Use “cd” command to open folder with adb/fastboot files.
    • Drag and drop .bat file to terminal window and press “Enter”, now it should work fine.

Please pay attention! If you’ll use “flash_all_lock.bat” while installing Global ROM on Chinese device, you’ll get a bricked device.

How to flash Xiaomi Mi8 using MiFlash tool

  1. Download and install all required drivers on your PC.
  2. Download and install MiFlash tool.
  3. Grab the official MIUI ROM for MiFlash/fastboot and unpack to the same folder with adb/fastboot files.
  4. Start your device in fastboot mode.
  5. Start MiFlash tool, press “Select” and locate the folder with ROM files. Activate the “Clean all” option, press “Refresh” button so that MiFlash tool can identify your connected device.
  6. If everything is done correctly, you can now press “Flash” button to start flashing process.
  7. After installation is completed you should see “Status – Flash Done”, and “Result – Success”.
  8. Phone will automatically reboots.

How to install Magisk and Root Xiaomi Mi8

If you’ll need to enable Google Pay with unlocked bootloader, you’ll need to activate root using the Magisk Manager and then hide root from Google Pay. To do this, just follow the steps below:

  1. Download and install MagiskManager-v5.8.3.apk
  2. In the main menu select “Install” > “Install Magisk-v16.0.zip” > “Install”.
  3. In “Magisk” open the “Magisk hide” menu and select “Google Pay” and other applications you want to hide root for.
  4. To do this you’ll need to patch “boot.img” using the Magisk manager and copy it to the device using adb via usb-debug. Extract your ROM, find boot.img file, copy to phone internal memory and patch it via Magisk:
    1. Next open terminal window and copy patched boot.img file to smartphone.
    2. Type the following line in terminal: 
      adb reboot bootloader
    3. Your Mi8 phone will reboot into EDL mode. Next type the following command: 
      fastboot flash boot patched_boot.img
    4. Then enter “fastboot reboot” to reboot your phone.
