Enter EDL (download), fastboot and recovery modes on Redmi Note 5A

How to boot Redmi Note 5a in fastboot mode

  1. To boot your phone in fastboot mode you’ll need to turn off your device, then press “Volume Down” button and then press “Power” button at the same time.
  2. If everything was done right you should see fastboot logo on the screen.

How to boot Redmi Note 5a in EDL – Emergency Download mode

  1. Download Fastboot_edl-v2.zip
  2. Unpack downloaded .zip archive on the desktop,
  3. Open extracted folder and double click on “Reboot.bat”.
  4. Reboot your phone in fastboot mode then connect it to PC and press “Enter” key on the keyboard.
  5. At this point your phone should be running in EDL mode, nothing is displayed on the screen.
  6. Now go to “Device Manager” and check for Qualcomm HC-USB QDLoader 9008 (COM Port).

How to boot Redmi Note 5A in Recovery mode?

Turn off your device, then press “Volume Up” and then “Power” button at the same time, after vibration signal release the “Power” button and wait until stock recovery or TWRP Custom Recovery starts.

To exit any of the modes above simply press and hold “Power” button.

How to enable developer options on Redmi Note 5A?

  1. Start your phone.
  2. Go to “Settings” > “About phone” > then tap 10 times on “MIUI version”.
  3. You’ll see a message telling that “You’re now a developer”.
  4. Go back to “Settings” > “Additional settings” > “Developer options”.

How to enter QC Test on Redmi Note 5A?

  1. Go to “Settings” > “About phone” > then tap 5 times on “Kernel version”.
  2. Tap “Back” to exit “QC Test” mode.

  1. Download TWRP Custom Recovery from the link below.
  2. Boot into TWRP and wipe everything except “MicroSD”.
  3. Install downloaded ROM archive.
  4. Optionally flash Gapps ARM64/7.1/nano and SuperSU.

By following these simple steps you can install any other Custom ROM version. Pay attention that in some cases the installation process could be different, pay attention to details and check for additional information if needed.

Download TWRP Custom Recovery for Redmi Note 5A

Below you can download the latest TWRP 3.2.1-0 for Xiaomi Redmi Note 5A (2/16) ugglite device which was released on 2018.01.10.

Before flashing TWRP Custom Recovery you must first unlock the bootloader. You must also have ADB drivers installed on your PC.

After installing the TWRP for the first time go to “Additional / Tools” > “Boot” > “Disable Verify”. By doing this you’ll disable the boot partition encryption, otherwise official MIUI ROM won’t start.

]]> This is an updated and most actual tutorial on how to officially unlock the bootloader on Xiaomi Redmi 5, Redmi 5A, 5 Plus and other devices. Previously you can unlock the bootloader only on Developer ROM version while now it’s possible on both Stable and Developer MIUI ROM versions.

Unlocking bootloader tutorial for Xiaomi Redmi 5, 5A and Redmi Note 5A

  1. Apply for official unlock permission with your Mi-Account. Go to this link: http://en.miui.com/unlock/

    Mi Unlock Permission
    Step 1: Apply for unlock permission.
  2. After you’ve applied and received unlock permission from MIUI sign into your Mi-Account on your phone.
  3. Enable “Developer options” on your device by tapping few times on MIUI version.

    OEM Unlocking
    Go to “Developer options” and enable “OEM Unlocking”.
  4. Go to “Developer options” and enable “OEM Unlocking”, then go to “Mi Unlock Status” and tap on “Add account and device”. “Mi Unlock Status” is available on Developer ROM versions as well as the latest Stable ROMs. There’s still a chance that you can get a device without “Mi Unlock Status” option, in this case you’ll need to flash the latest Developer Weekly ROM version first.
  5. Download and install the latest version of MiFlashUnlock (unlocking with MiUnlock 1.x version won’t work).
  6. Install MiFlashUnlock, open it and press “Agree” button.
  7. Sign into your Mi-account.

    Mi Account Unlock Status
    Go to “Mi Unlock Status” and tap on “Add account and device”.
  8. Turn off your phone completely and start it in fastboot mode. Press “Power” and “Volume Down” buttons at the same time until fastboot logo appear on the screen.
  9. Connect your phone to PC in fastboot mode and press “Unlock” button.
  10. If everything was done the right way the progress bar will stop at 99% and you’ll see “Binding time is too short, less than 72 hours” or “After XX hours of trying to unlock the device” message.
  11. Now you’ll have to wait until the countdown. There’s no way to skip or make the process faster. Do not change Mi-Account or flash different ROM version at this point.
  12. After the required waiting period is over, open the MiUnlock tool once again and repeat steps from 6 to 9. Now you’ll be able to unlock the bootloader finally.
  13. You can check the bootloader lock status by going to “Mi Unlock Status” in the settings menu.

  1. Backup your personal data.
  2. Reboot into TWRP Custom Recovery.
  3. Go to “Wipe” menu.

  5. Select ART/Dalvik Cache, System, Data, Internal Storage, Cache partitions.
  6. Confirm wipe by swipe. Remember that all data will be deleted!

  1. Copy downloaded .img file to phone internal memory.
  2. Reboot into TWRP Custom Recovery.
  3. Press “Install”.
  4. Select “Install IMG”.
  5. Locate .img file in the phone memory.
  6. Select the partition you want to flash: for recovery – “Recovery” & for custom kernel select “Boot”.
  7. Swipe to confirm installation.
  8. Reboot into system.

Install Google Play and Google Market on Redmi Note 5A with China MIUI ROM

Just in case – don’t forget to backup your data before doing any manipulations with your phone! Only you responsible for any possible issues.

  1. Download Google Services archive to your device: Mi6-Google-Play.zip (this was made for Xiaomi Mi6 phone, but will also work fine on Redmi Note 5A as well).
  2. Unpack download archive on your phone.
  3. Open file explorer application on your phone and go to unpacked Mi6-Google-Play folder. Then open the “AllBackup” folder, inside you’ll see “Mi6” folder, use “Cut” tool on it and move to “miui > backup > AllBackup”.
  4. Now go to “Settings” > “Advanced settings” > “Restore and reset” > “Local backups”. You should see the available backup here. Tap on it to start recovery.
  5. After the backup has been restored Google Play icon should appear on your screen.
  6. That’s it! No need to use TWRP or install Global ROM.

If this method doesn’t work for you, then try to use the Google Installer 3.0, simply download the .apk archive below and install like a usual application: GoogleInstaller_3.0.apk

Install TWRP Custom Recovery and Xiaomi.eu ROM on Redmi Note 5A

  1. First of all you’ll need to unlock the bootloader on your phone. The process of unlocking Redmi Note 5A is just like unlocking any other Mi phone. Browse our website for the full guidance. In case you’ve got locked bootloader, you can’t proceed with TWRP installation.
  2. Download TWRP Custom Recovery (find download links in the bottom of this post) and unpack downloaded .zip archive to “C:\”.
  3. Start your device in fastboot mode (press and hold “Power” and “Volume down” buttons at the same time) and connect to PC via USB 2.0.
  4. Open the folder with unpacked TWRP and run “Flash-TWRP” file.
  5. Wait until installation is fully completed and your phone will automatically reboot into TWRP.
  6. Confirm partition modifications by right swipe and enter main menu.
  7. In the main menu, go to “Wipe” > “Advanced Wipe” and select Dalvik, System, Data, Internal Storage and Cache partitions. Swipe to confirm wipe.
  8. Return to main menu screen.
  9. Important step! Now go to “Reboot” and tap on “Recovery”, swipe to confirm. If you skip this step, most probably the “Data” partition will be encrypted.
  10. After phone reboots into recovery, you can connect it to your PC via USB cable and copy downloaded multilingual ROM, Xiaomi.eu for example.
  11. Go to “Reboot” > “Recovery” once again and swipe to confirm.
  12. After reboot go to “Install” menu, select the archive with ROM files and swipe to confirm ROM installation.
  13. After ROM is successfully installed, tap on the “Reboot System”. Your phone will automatically reboot.
  14. Enjoy your newly installed ROM!
