How to install Stock ROM (fastboot) on Xiaomi Mi A1

First of all, make sure your phone has at least 50% battery charge and secondary it’s recommended to use stock USB cable and rear USB ports on your PC.

Download USB drivers for your OS.

Unpack “Tools” folder to “C:\Tools”.

Download required ROM version.

Unpack downloaded ROM .tgz archive to the previously unpacked “Tools” folder. It’s recommended to use WinRAR for extracting .tgz archives.

Install drivers for fastboot mode (we’ve previously made an instruction post, you can find the link in the first paragraph). P.S. No need to install fastboot drivers on Linux or MacOS.

Next, you are required to unlock bootloader on your Mi A1. You can find a tutorial on our website.

Using this method you can manually install Incremental OTA Updates on your Mi A1 smartphone. Pay attention! You can install OTA updates only if you’ve got the stock recovery and stock bootloader on your phone, bootloader lock status also doesn’t matter in this case.

Download USB drivers for your operating system.

Unpack “Tools” folder to “C:\Tools”.

Download required an update and copy to “C:\Tools” folder.

Turn off your smartphone and then boot into Recovery mode. To boot Mi A1 in recovery, turn it off and then press and hold “Power” and “Volume Up” buttons at the same time.

You should see “Android” logo on the screen and maybe “No command” message.

Now we will need to enter Recovery menu. Press the “Power” button and at the same time press “Volume Up” button for a second, and then release “Power” button. Maybe it will not work the first time, just try again, just don’t let your phone reboot itself.

When you’ve entered the recovery menu, use volume buttons to navigate and select “Apply update from ADB”, confirm by pressing the “Power” button. You can also use “Apply update from sdcard” to install update straight from SD card.

Connect your phone to PC via USB cable.

If you’re connecting your phone for the first time, make sure you’ve installed all drivers correctly. Refer to the driver installation tutorial.

Go to “Tools” folder with our OTA update, then press and hold “Shift” key and click the right mouse button on empty space, select “Open command window here”.

In the opened command prompt enter this command to check if the device is connected and recognized successfully:

adb devices

If your device is found successfully, you’ll see device unique number. You can continue with updating. If you don’t see device ID, try to reinstall drivers again.

To start the flashing process, enter this line, where “update.zip” is the name of downloaded OTA update archive.

adb sideload update.zip

Wait until the installation is completed.

Now you can reboot by selecting “Reboot system now”, press “Power” button to confirm.

The first startup makes take around 10-15 minutes.

We’ll try to cover two different methods on how to do this, please check out both of the methods first, and then choose the one which you prefer.

Download and install ADB/Fastboot drivers for Xiaomi Mi A1

Let’s start with the required downloads first. Below you can download the latest version of ADB/Fastboot drivers for your system:

Windows version: tools_r27.0.0-windows.zip

Linux version: tools_r27.0.0-linux.zip

MacOS version: tools_r27.0.0-macosx.zip

Windows version: tools_r26.0.1-windows.zip

Linux version: tools_r26.0.1-linux.zip

MacOS version: tools_r26.0.1-macosx.zip

First method:

Now let’s proceed with installation steps:

Unpack downloaded drivers to any folder you want.

Turn off your Mi A1 Android smartphone.

Now start your phone in bootloader/fastboot mode by pressing the “Power” button with “Volume Down” at the same time. You can also proceed with installation if USB debugging is enabled or use ADB Sideload.

Connect your phone to PC.

Go to “Device manager”.

You should see “Android” or “Xiaomi Mi A1” device with yellow exclamation point. Right mouse click on it and select “Update drivers”.

Now press “Search for drivers on this PC”. Don’t forget to enable “Include subfolders when searching”.

Press “Browse” and locate the “usb_drivers” folder in previously unpacked “Tools” folder.

Press “Next” and wait until drivers are installed.

Second method:

In case you still can’t install drivers using the above method, you can always try an alternative one.

Sometimes Windows automatically install wrong drivers and mixing up different modes. To fix this issue, you have to manually reinstall drivers on your PC.

Right mouse click on your device and select “Update drivers”.

Press “Search for drivers on this PC” > “Select previously installed drivers” > “Show all devices” > “Install from disk” > Press “Browse” > go to “Tools” folder > “usb_drivers” and open “android_winusb.inf” > press “Ok” to continue.

Now for the most important part. You’ll need to remove the check-mark against “Only supported devices”, then you should see three available options:

Android ADB Interface

Android Bootloader Interface

Android Composite ADB Interface

Select the correct mode, which you’re currently using the proceed with installation.

Congratulations! Correct drivers are now installed on your PC and ready to work.

Now go to “Settings” > “Additional Settings” > “Developer options” > Enable “USB Debugging”.

Release the buttons after short vibration signal.

Now press “Flash” to start flashing your Mi Max Pro phone. If everything was successful in the end you’ll “Success” message. Flashing could take around 15 minutes.

Disconnect your phone from PC and turn it on with the “Power” button.

How to flash Custom ROM on Mi Max Pro with locked / unlocked bootloader

If you haven’t previously flashed your phone and have no experience with TWRP, you may first try installing the official MIUI ROM since that is much easier. While Custom ROM installation is a little bit more complicated.

Download Custom ROM you want to flash. No need to unpack the .zip archive.

Download TWRP Custom Recovery for Mi Max Pro: TWRPMax(32Gb).rar | TWRPMax(64-128Gb).rar

Open MiFlash and install TWRP for your phone model. The process of flashing is described above. From the links above you can download TWRP Custom Recovery for MiFlash installation. You must first install the Global or China 8.0.3.0 MIUI ROM on your device before flashing TWRP. This will give you the option to install TWRP without unlocked bootloader. On newer ROM version you’ll have to unlock bootloader first and only after proceed to flashing custom recovery.

After you’ve flashed TWRP do not disconnect your device from PC.

Boot into Custom Recovery by pressing “Volume Up” + “Power” buttons. If TWRP asks for password, tap cancel and allow system partition modifications.

Go back to main menu and tap on “Wipe”. Select “Data”, “Cache” and “Dalvik” partitions.

Back to main menu again and reboot into system.

Go to “Mount” and enable “MTP”.

Copy downloaded custom ROM .zip archive to phone internal memory.

In “Mount” disable “MTP” and safely remove USB cable.

In case you see a checkmark against “system”, remove it to unmount “system” partition.

Now go to “Install” menu and select ROM .zip file. Confirm with swipe to continue. Flashing will take around 10-15 and you’ll see a successful message in the end.

Reboot into system.

You should see a Mi logo on a black screen. First startup will take around 10 minutes. If you can’t boot into the system, you can try rebooting into TWRP Custom Recovery and try installing ROM once again, this help sometimes.

First thing you need to know if you want to officially unlock bootloader on your Xiaomi phone is that you must have Developer ROM installed.

Short information about different ROM versions:

Global MIUI Rom starts from 8, 8.3 or 8.3.1

Developer ROM version start from the year it has been released.

In case your Mi account is old enough, you may try to unlock even on a Stable ROM version, but this happens very rarely. In case you aren’t able to get unlock permission, then you are required to flash Weekly Developer ROM.

There are exceptions for a couple of devices: Mi4c and Mi Note Pro device comes with unlocked bootloader. You’ll need to flash China Developer ROM version, got bootloader locked again, and then request permission to unlock bootloader. Waiting time in this case is around 4-8 days, and all that time Mi Unlock will be showing “Current account is different from the account info on the device” message.

How to unlock bootloader after getting official unlock permission from MIUI

Sign in into your Mi account with enabled unlock permission. It’s recommended to make some random actions related to this account, for example sign in and find your device here http://www.i.mi.com/, this helps to avoid stuck at 50% bootloader unlock issue.

Download and extract MiFlashUnlock (download link below).

Start MiFlashUnlock and press “Accept”.

Then sign in with your Mi account with unlock permission.

Turn off your device completely.

Press “Power” and “Volume -” buttons and wait for rabbit logo to appear.

Now connect your device to PC and press “Unlock” to start the unlocking process.

If all three boxes are highlighted, then you’ve successfully unlocked a bootloader on your Xiaomi device! If not you should visit MIUI forum and ask for additional help.

On Redmi 3 & Redmi Note 3 device you can check bootloader status by going to “Settings” > “About” > tap 5 times on kernel version and look for fastboot lock state. If you see “unlock” then you have unlocked device, if “lock” than bootloader is locked.

Below you’ll find a short instruction tutorial on how to use fastboot mode on your trusty Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X device.

[Guide] Flash Redmi Note 4X Fastboot Mode for Newbies

First what you’ll need to know is that if you want to flash Redmi Note 4X device in fastboot mode, then you’ll need to copy files you want to flash on your device into the same folder with fastboot.exe. Usually adb.exe is also placed in the same folder, but in this case we’ve got nothing to do with adb.exe.

Recovery file or boot.img file can be named any way you want, but it’s important that in Command Prompt you write the exact file name you’ll be flashing. So if the file is named boot.img, you’ll need to enter the command using the same name boot.img.

Start your Redmi Note 4X device in fastboot mode (to enter fastboot: press and hold “Volume -” and “Power” buttons at the same time). Your see rabbit logo – your device is in fastboot mode.

Next on your PC go to the folder with all the files. For example “tools” folder with adb & fastboot. Copy .img files for flashing in the same folder.

Open “Command Prompt” and enter cd C:\tools to enter C:\tools directory. Connect your device to PC via USB-cable (it is highly recommended to use rear USB ports). Your device should be already running in fastboot mode. Then in command prompt enter fastboot devices command.

In command prompt you should see device identification number (unique combination of numbers and symbols of your device). In case this does not happen and device list is empty, then your phone is not connected. The issue is related to connection problems or missing drivers.

Let’s assume your device is successfully connected and identified. Next type this line:

fastboot flash boot boot.img

“flash” command means start flashing your device. “boot”stands for partition you want to flash. And lastly “boot.img” stands for the file name you’ll be flashing. Type correctly the line above and press Enter to start flashing. The process will be shown in Command Prompt window. We’ve successfully flashed boot.img.

Next, in case we need to flash recovery, we need to follow pretty much the same as steps. Type this to start flashing recovery:

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Here “recovery” means the partition we are going to flash and “recovery.img” is the name of recovery file. It can have any other different name, like “miuirecoveryrom.img”, then your command will look like this:

fastboot flash recovery miuirecoveryrom.img

After flashing you may enter:

fastboot reboot

And you device will automatically reboot.

Now to boot your device in TWRP, type this line (where twrp.img is the name of your recovery file) and press Enter:

fastboot boot twrp.img

After your device successfully boots into recovery you can install everything you need (Root, patches and other stuff).
