Here’s a short update for Xiaomi Mi4S owners. Below you’ll find the easiest method on how to upgrade your phone to the latest MIUI 9 (or Xiaomi.eu multi-lingual version) ROM.

Tutorial on how to update Mi4S (aqua) to MIUI9

So, let’s get started with Android 7 MIUI 9 ROM installation. You can download latest ROMs for Xiaomi Mi4S here.

First of all, you must request official unlock permission from MIUI.
Download MiFlash and install the official China ROM.
Start your phone, enable developer options, USB debugging and OEM unlock (otherwise, MiUnlock won’t work). After you’ve enabled these options, MiUnlock will go further 50%.
Now unlock the bootloader.
Use fastboot and flash TWRP Custom Recovery for Android 7. Here’s a tutorial on how to flash TWRP on Mi4S. Download the recommended version below.
Boot into TWRP, wipe partitions and make “data format”, reboot into recovery once again.
Install MIUI 9 ROM and reboot into system.

Some notes about LineageOS for Mi4S. This ROM comes without pre-installed GAPPS, you’ll need to download and install them separately. Quite fast and smooth ROM, without any trash application. Fingerprint scanner is not working on the current version, probably will be fixed in the later releases.

How to install LineageOS on Mi4S?

If you’re flashing from another ROM, you must do a full wipe.
Download LineageOS ROM and GAPPS from opengapps.org
Boot into TWRP Recovery.
Install downloaded ROM.
Install GAPPS.
Reboot into system.

This custom ROM is suitable for Mi4S device. Device is recognized as Mi4C. Pay attention, that you need to make full wipe if you’re installing AOSPA ROM from another ROM version. It’s recommended to use latest version of TWRP Custom Recovery.

[Guide] How to install TWRP Custom Recovery on Mi4S

Let’s continue the series of Xiaomi Mi4S tutorials. Below you’ll find out how to flash or update TWRP Custom Recovery on this awesome Android smartphone. You must have unlocked bootloader. There’s two ways on how to unlock Mi4S: the first one is request official unlock permission from MIUI website, other way is unofficial unlock by using unlock patch. Find more information here.

Install or update TWRP Recovery on Xiaomi Mi4S

If you don’t have custom recovery installed already, then use fastboot commands:

fastboot flash recovery recovery_file_name.img
fastboot boot recovery_file_name.img

If everything was done correctly, your device will automatically reboots into TWRP recovery mode.

If you’ve already installed TWRP Custom Recovery on your device and you want to update it, then boot in TWRP recovery and install .zip or .img file with newest version. To install .img file, you need to go to “Install” menu, select “Install img”, select TWRP .img file, select “recovery” and install.

[Guide] How to install MIUI Android 7.0 ROM on Mi4S

Hi! Since MIUI Android 7.0 is now officially released for Xiaomi Mi4S, we post a tutorial on how to install this ROM on Mi4S without deleting TWRP recovery and deleting data. This guide is working both on officially and unofficially unlocked bootloader.

Please, pay attention! You’re doing everything at your own risk, and we’re not responsible for any possible issues.

Install Android 7.0 MIUI 8.2.1.0 ROM on Xiaomi Mi4S

To flash official Android 7.0 Nougat ROM on your Mi4S device you’ll need:

Installed TWRP Recovery.
Downloaded Android 7.0 ROM.
Downloaded TWRP Recovery for Android 7.0.

Boot in TWRP Custom Recovery.
Install > Select downloaded Android 7.0 ROM and wipe “Cache” / “Dalvik cache”.
Without booting into system, go back to TWRP main menu and install TWRP for 7.0
Now get back to TWRP main menu, go to “Reboot” and select “Reboot into recovery”.
In the new TWRP select “Restart” > “System” and reboot into system.
First startup will take longer than usual.
Now you’ve got installed Android 7.0, TWRP Custom Recovery and all data is saved.
In case of any problems, it’s recommended to wipe “Data” partitions.

[Guide] Downgrade Xiaomi Mi4S to Android 5.1 from Android 7.0

Below you’ll find the tutorial on how to roll back to Android 5.1 after installing Android 7.0 on your Xiaomi Mi4S device. Please pay attention, that author of this tutorial is not responsible for any of your actions, and you’re doing everything at your own risk. After downgrading to Android 5.1, all data from your device will be deleted. It’s important that you’re completely understand what you’re doing. Make sure you’ve made all required backups via TWRP Custom Recovery. In case you’ve previously unlocked bootloader on both Android 7 and Android 5, it will remain unlocked. If you’ve done unofficial bootloader unlock without getting MIUI permission, see the tutorial below. Now let’s continue.

How to downgrade Mi4S from Android 7.0 to Android 5.1

What’s required?

If you’ve got unofficially unlocked bootloader, you’ll need to use your PC.
If you’ve got officially unlocked bootloader, you need downloaded TWRP for Android 5.1, the PC will not be required.
In both cases, you’ll need Android 5.1 ROM.
Important! This method is not working on 8.2.1.0 MIUI ROM version. Roll back to earlier version!

In TWRP Custom Recovery, without rebooting your device.

Wipe > Swipe to confirm.
Install > Flash Android 5.1. > Swipe to confirm.

If you’ve got officially unlocked bootloader:

Install > Install .img > TWRP for Android 5.1 > Recovery > Swipe to confirm.
Reboot > Recovery.
Reboot into system.

If you’ve got unofficially unlocked bootloader:

Reboot into bootloader.
Unofficially unlock bootloader and install TWRP Custom Recovery again.
Reboot into system.

After that, you can return to the TWRP Custom Recovery and restore Android 5.1 backup.

How to unofficially unlock bootloader on Xioami Mi4S

Download and install MiFlash tool.
Enter EDL mode by typing these commands:
```
adb reboot edl
```
Download unlock patch and install via MiFlash tool (select “Flash all except data and storage”): unlock.zip
Now after we’ve unlocked bootloader, we can install TWRP Custom Recovery.
Download and unpack this archive: twrp (1).zip
Boot your device in fastboot mode (press and hold “Volume down” and “Power” button), connect your device to PC and run flash.bat
Wait until TWRP recovery start, confirm with everything and select English language.
