Hello guys, in this post we’ll cover the tutorial on how you can try and restore your Xiaomi Mi A2 device. Before you continue with this guide, make sure that you understand the risk and absolutely sure in what you’re doing.

If suddenly after unsuccessful firmware flashing your Mi A2 device stopped loading, can’t enter Fastboot or EDL modes, these guide might help you.

To remove the screen you can use the regular plastic card, just sharpen it a little bit using some tools. Then make sure you’re using quality cable (in case your device isn’t recognized, try switching the cables) and have all the required drivers installed on your PC.

After you’ve connected the Test-Points, connect the cable, wait 3-5 secs after you’ll see the required device identified, release the test-points and flash device. In some cases, the firmware is missing .img file, move and flash it separately.

If the installation stopped in the middle, you can still try and boot into the system, there’s a chance it will work ok, so you should definitely try first. If it’s not working, try flashing different firmware version using test-points once again. Remember that there’s no 100% chance that this will work.

Restore Bricked Xiaomi Mi A2 with Test-Points Method

All actions with your phone are done by you at your own risk. The author is not responsible for any damaged devices.

Take out the SIM card tray. Unscrew the two bolts from the end of the phone.

Find something flat and preferably non-metallic (an old credit card might work) and peel off the phone display from the metal rim and snap it.

Now turn off the three bolts shown in the image. Carefully disconnect the display cable from the main board and set it aside.

Next disconnect the battery cable and fingerprint scanner from the board.

The last thing you need to do is to find the test-point contacts and connect them.

Flashing Xiaomi Mi A2 device after Test-Points

Start MiFlash tool with selected stock firmware version.

Open “Device Manager”

Connect the test-points (assuming you’ve already followed the guide above). Use some metal tool like tweezers to connect the test points together. While holding test-points together, connect your device to PC.

After new device appeared in device manager, you can release the test-points and continue.

Press “refresh” in MiFlash tool, a new device should also appear. This means that everything is good and we’ve entered EDL mode.

Select “clean all” and press “flash”.

Attention! For those of you who are restoring after unsuccessful flashing of MIUI or stock ROM, you’ll need to put the phone back all together and repeat the flashing procedure via fastboot. This is required to restore phone boot partition completely.

Android 8.0 Custom Roms for Mi A2

Right now, we only have one good Android 8 ROM released. It’s Mokee and it is based on LOS engine.

Mokee OS

Latest update 15.12.18

OpenGapps | Recommended TWRP | HEX Kernel

Download link

How to install Mokee OS?

Boot into TWRP Custom Recovery.

Go to “Install” > Locate downloaded archive and flash it. It will be installed on inactive partition.

If you’ve previously installed stock Android 9 firmware version, then you also need to flash HEX kernel together with Mokee OS.

How to flash Custom ROM on Mi A2?

Here’s a general tutorial which suits pretty much for every ROM version built on Android 9.

First of all you’ll need is an unlocked bootloader, TWRP (Pitch Black for example) for temporary boot and backup of your personal data. After that just follow the steps below:

Boot your Mi A2 smartphone in fastboot mode.

Open command line and perform the general reset with “fastboot -w” command, this is required, so make sure you save all files from phone internal memory.

Now we’ll temporary boot into TWRP with the following command, where “twrp.img” is the name of the TWRP you’re going to use.

fastboot boot twrp.img

Connect your phone to PC and copy all required files for flashing via MTP: ROM files, Magisk and Gapps.

Flash ROM (it will be installed on inactive partition)

Reboot from TWRP into the opposite partition.

Boot into fastboot mode again and start TWRP once again:

fastboot boot twrp.img

Install Magisk, you can use ADB Sideload again. On the first startup your phone will automatically reboot after the logo appeared on the screen.

Now reboot into TWRP for the last time and install latest Gapps without doing any additional wipes.

Hey guys! Do you love MIUI firmware as much as we do? This tutorial will help you to flash the MIUI ROM version on your Xiaomi Mi A2 (jasmine). Please follow the instruction carefully if you want to flash the ROM successfully and have the option to roll-back to Android One firmware.

Tutorial on how to install MIUI on Xiaomi A2

Required files and tools:

Xiaomi Flash Tool: MiFlash20180528.zip

Latest Official ROM for Mi A2: Download here

MIUI ROM: Download here

Fastboot & EDL: fastboot_edl.rar

TWRP (Recommended version): Download here

After you’ve downloaded and installed all required tools, you can continue with the tutorial. Remember to backup your personal data.

Extract the A2 firmware.

Extract the MIUI firmware from Xiaomi 6X version.

Open the folder with unpacked A2 files, go to “images” folder and copy the following files abl.elf, prog_emmc_firehose_Sdm660_ddr.elf, prog_emmc_firehose_Sdm660_lite.elf to the “images” folder with MIUI firmware files.

Pay attention, that you should write down the version of A2 original ROM you’ve copied these 3 files previously, it will be needed to rollback to MIUI.

Next thing that you’ll need to do is disable driver digital signature verification on your Windows PC. After it’s been disabled you must install the correct drivers from MiFlash. To do this, open Xiaomi Flash Tool as administrator, go to “Driver” and then press “Install”.

Unlock the bootloader and all crucial partitions on your device.

Start MiFlash tool as administrator.

Locate the folder with MIUI ROM files.

Start your device in EDL mode.

Reboot into fastboot mode.

Connect to PC via USB cable.

Unpack the fastboot_edl.rar archive to “C:\” drive, open command prompt and open the “edl.cmd” file.

Phone screen should turn off and your device should be now identified as “Qualcomm 9008” in device manager.

Now in MiFlash press “refresh”, select “clean all” and press “flash” to start flashing. Wait until installation process is completed.

Next we need to install TWRP. Start your phone in fastboot mode, copy previously downloaded “twrp-3.2.1-test-wayne.img” TWRP image file to the same folder with fastboot files and enter the following line in terminal: fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.2.1-test-wayne.img

Now find any suitable MIUI localized multilingual ROM (xiaomi.eu for example), open the .zip archive with it and search for “firmware-update” folder. Remove all files in there except, BTFM.bin, cmnlib.mbn, cmnlib64.mbn, devcfg.mbn, dspso.bin, NON_HLOS.bin, splash.img.

Save the archive and copy to phone memory while keeping TWRP on.

Install the MIUI localized ROM version, after the ROM is fully installed, wipe the “dalvik”, “cache” and “data” partitions.

Congratulations! You’ve now have Mi A2 with MIUI installed.

You might see a message, that data partition is encrypted, cancel the message, go to “Wipe” menu and format “data” partition.

How to root Xiaomi Mi A2?

Guys, let’s take a look on a easy solution on how you can enable root on your Mi A2 without any additional hustle. But of course you should keep in mind that you’re the one who’s responsible for any actions with your phone! So remember to make all required backups and save your personal and important data.

First of all, you need to download the corresponding kernel version for your phone, depending on what firmware is currently installed (patched kernel versions for the newer firmware are listed above):

boot_9.6.5.0.img

boot_9.6.9.0.img

boot_9.6.10.0.img

boot_9.6.12.0.img

boot_V9.6.14.0.im

After you’ve downloaded and copied the required patched boot file, download and install Magisk Manager. Then follow the steps below:

Open Magisk Manager > go to “Settings” and “Update source” > “Beta channel”.

Open Magisk Manager again and go to “Install” > “Install” > “Patch Boot image file” > Select the “boot.img” file from the device memory.

The process will start, wait until kernel modifications are completed.

Download required flashing drivers: tools_r28.0.0-windows.zip

Extract the archive with drivers to “C:\Tools”.

Now find the patched kernel by following this path “/sdcard/MagiskManager/patched_boot.img” and then copy .img file to the folder with ADB drivers, “C:\Tools” in our case.

Boot your phone in fastboot mode, install drivers (if needed), unlock the bootloader (that’s important!) and temporary boot the patched kernel file with the following command:

fastboot boot patched_boot.img

Pay attention that after this step you’ll have root enabled (works until the first reboot!). If you don’t need permanent root and you want to keep OTA updates option, then stop here and do not complete the next step.

I assume you need permanent root on your phone… ok, let’s continue.

Go back to Magisk Manager > “Install” > “Install” > “Manual installation”. Wait until installation process is completed.

That’s it! Reboot your device.

How to enable navigation gestures on Xiaomi Mi A2?

Here’s a working method on you can easily enable the navigation gestures on your Mi A2 device if they aren’t working properly without loosing an OTA updates possibility. We’ll use the Fluid N.G. application in this exact case:

Download Fluid N.G. application and install on your phone.

Give all required permissions and don’t forget to enable USB-debugging.

Install adb drivers on your PC. Extract “tools” folder to “C:\Tools”.

Connect your device to PC via USB cable and enter the following line in terminal window:

adb shell pm grant com.fb.fluid android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS

You’ll see a modal window with request of debugging permission.

That’s it, now we’ve hidden on-screen buttons and navigation gestures working.

Tutorial on how to enable Smart Lock on Mi A2

Another small tutorial is here… If you can’t find “Smart Lock” option in the menu anywhere, try the following method:

Open “Settings” and disable “Smart Lock (Google)” in “Trust Agents”.

Reboot your device after you’ve disabled the “Smart Lock”.

Now after the reboot, open the “Settings” once again, go to “Trust Agents” and enable Smart Lock.

After these really simple steps, the Smart Lock options should be back.

If you own Xiaomi Mi A2 and you want to root, unbrick, backup, factory restore, or even camera2 enable your device, Mi A2 Toolkit is the software that you need. Mi A2 Toolkit is a custom created software tool by the developer Daha3ker, specifically for Mi A2 devices. Its main purpose is to help advanced users to quickly and easily achieve their goals in customizing their devices and adding extra features.

What is Mi A2 Toolkit and its main features?

This custom developed software is compatible only with Windows operating systems. Mi A2 Toolkit is tested and works perfectly with the Mi A2 Global variant with firmware version 9.6.10.0 (Android One August update).

From experiencewe have with Mi A2 Toolkit, there shouldn’t be happening any problems. However, before using this software, keep in mind that the developer or weare not responsible for any potential damage caused by you while using this software. Now, here is what Mi A2 Toolkit can you use it for.

Enable Camera2 API – This feature works on rooted as well as on unrooted devices. Unrooted devices will have temporary root then will automatically revert back. This allows OTA’s to install. However, if in some case it can’t be installed we are not responsible for that. There is always a risk when modifying system files.

Restore and Backup options – This only works for user and system data. You still need to back up your sd card to prevent losing data from it.

Attempt unbrick – This feature will try to unbrick your device without deleting your data.

Reboot options – Includes exit fastboot, as well as reboot to fastboot and edl modes.

Lock bootloader (OEM flashing and critical)

Revert to stock ROM(August update)

Unlock flashing critical

Unroot Mi A2 devices

Root Mi A2 devices

Unlock flashing

Enter fastboot

Launch TWRP

Unlock OEM

How to Use Mi A2 Toolkit to Root Mi A2

Before starting the rooting procedure, you must have an unlocked bootloader on your Xiaomi Mi A2. But no worries, we have you covered.Unlocking your bootloader is explained in the steps below.

Note: All data will be wiped during the bootloader unlocking procedure. Make sure you backup all important data from your device.

Now, follow all the steps correctly, and you will gain root access on your device.

First, enable developer mode on your device. (Go to Settings and then open About phone. Now tap 7 times on MIUI Version.)

Next, navigate to developer options and enable USB debugging and OEM unlocking.

Install ADB and Fastboot drivers on your PC/Laptop. (You can download the minimal setup from the following link.)

Connect you Mi A2 phone (while turned on) and allow USB debugging when asked.

Now, boot your smartphone into fastboot mode (Turn it off and press and hold Volume Down + Power a the same time.)

Now, set up the device again. Next, enable developer options and OEM unlocking. Then, connect to your PC and allow USB debugging.

Boot your device into fastboot again (as described above) and connect to your PC if it isn’t already.

Now download patched boot.img (August months V9.6.10.0.ODIMIFE, August 5 2018).
Note: Do not use it if you are on any other month patch.

Copy the patched_boot.img you just downloaded to the ADB folder.

Launch Comand Prompt (PowerShell) and run the following command:

fastboot boot patched_boot.img

This will boot your device.

Now, download Magisk Manager apk and install it on your device.

Launch Magisk Manager and click on install. Then choose Direct Install (recommended). It will download the magisk zip package and automatically flash it.

How To Install TWRP on Xiaomi Mi A2

Before jumping to the installation process keep in mind that if you install TWRP on your device, it will void your warranty. Other than that, in order for this procedure to work your device must be rooted. You are performing the process on your own risk of bricking or damaging your device. We are not responsible for any unwanted scenario.

For anyone who wants to install TWRP on their Xiaomi A2, here are the steps:

First, navigate to settings on your Xiaomi device and activate the developer mode. (Go to Settings and tap on About phone. Now tap 7 times on MIUI Version).

Now, enable USB debugging. (Go to Settings and tap on Developer options. Scroll down and activate the toggle USB debugging).

Enable OEM unlocking. (While in Developer options, scroll down and activate the toggle OEM unlocking).

Press the Volume and Power buttons at the same time until your device enters in Fastboot mode.

Once it is in Fastboot mode, connect it to your PC via USB cable.

Download the latest TWRP built (3.2.3-0) from the following link . Then rename the file you just downloaded to twrp.img and continue on the next step.

Download ADB and Fastboot if you haven’t installed already. (You can get the minimal setup package from the following link ).

Run the setup to install ADB and Fastboot.

Navigate to the folder where you installed ADB and Fastboot. (Mine is C:\adb).

Make sure you put the twrp .img file (the one you have downloaded and renamed before) in the same folder.

Hold down the Shift key and right-click on a blank empty space in the adb folder.

Select Open PowerShell window here (or Command Window) from the menu.

Once you see the CMD console on your screen, you can continue with the following step.

Flash the TWRP 3.2.3-0 file using the following command.

fastboot flash boot twrp.img (This will flash the file in the currently active slot A unless you have changed it before. You do not need to flash it in both slots.).

Reboot your device using the following command. But before you press Enter (to reboot the device) hold volume up button to boot in recovery mode.

fastboot reboot

Once the device boots up in TWRP it will ask you for decrypt code. Choose cancel on the prompt.

On the next screen choose Keep Read Only and you are in TWRP recovery.

Now, go to reboot and select slot B. Then go back to reboot and choose Reboot to recovery.
“this will boot to stock recovery it shows dead reboot with no command”

Hold Power and Volume Up buttons for almost 10 seconds. Do not hold long enough to reboot the phone. You may try more than once until it shows recovery options.

Once you see the recovery options on the screen, select wipe data factory reset and choose Yes.

After wiping choose reboot to bootloader.

Run again Command Prompt in the adb folder (as you did in the step 7) and type the following commands:

fastboot set_active a
fastboot reboot

Now your device will reboot but it is encrypted. After this DO NOT wipe data or factory reset in TWRP because it will result in boot loop.

On your Android device, download ES file manager or Root Browser, launch it and navitage to vendor > etc > fstab.qcom. Copy fstab.qcom in some folder on your device as a backup.

Once you have it saved in a different folder, open the original file (the one located in vendor>etc) and edit the line number 10. Change forceencrypted=footer to encryptable=footer save the file.

Reboot your device and once it boots up, reboot it into recovery.

Now, Install Magisk 17.1.zip. (You can download the latest stable version 17.1 from the following link ).

Then, go to wipe and do a factory reset (swipe the factory reset slider).

Note: If your device gets stuck at boot-logo or you are experiencing touch issues, restore the Stock Boot.img. You can do that by using the following fastboot command.

fastboot flash boot boot.img

If you do not have a boot.img of your Xiaomi Mi A2, you can get the latest ones from the following link .

The new Xiaomi Mi A2 is the second Android One device after Xiaomi Mi A1. The Mi A2 features a Snapdragon 660 processor and 4GB or 6GB of RAM. Yet, the phone’s key selling point is its dual-camera configuration. It sports a 12MP+20MP camera setup at the rear and a 20MP at the front.

Despite promising a stock-like Android Oreo experience, the Mi A2 favors a custom camera app over Google Camera. And for good reason too. The Mi A2 camera contains a few software tricks. It shoots in portrait mode, for example, using an intelligent system for choosing sensors. Its shots are some of the best for midrange devices.

The Mi A2 camera app is thus an excellent addition to any Xiaomi device. So, it was a welcome development to hear that ports of the app have made their way to the Xiaomi Mi A1 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro.

Thanks to XDA member Dipesh17, you can now try out the Mi A2 camera on the Mi A1. Also, XDA senior member carlosggb has created a port of the camera for the Redmi Note 5 Pro.

How to use Xiaomi Mi A2 camera app on other models

You’ll need to do a few things first before you can install the Mi A2 camera. See below.

Prerequisites:

Root permissions

Related: How to root Xiaomi Mi A1

Install TWRP custom recovery

Related: Download TWRP custom recovery for Xiaomi Mi A1

If you’ve done the above, you may now proceed with the installation.

Installation:

Download these two files first:

Mi A2 Camera for Mi A1 by Dipesh17: MiA2Cam-v10.zip

Camera A2 Experimental by Dipesh17: Camera_A2_Experimental2.zip

Boot into TWRP and flash the Mi A2 Camera for Mi A1 zip file.

Restart the device

Boot into TWRP again and flash the Camera A2 Experimental zip file

Restart the device to test out the Mi A2 camera on your Mi A1

Troubleshooting

Some users have reported ending up with an app named 60 in place of the Mi A2 camera. This app crashes on opening. If you face such a problem try out this mod by XDA senior member joeyhuab:

Xiaomi Mi A2 Camera: Xiaomi-Mi-A2-Stock-Camera-v8.zip

Download and flash it to replace the Mi A2 Camera by Dipesh17

Also, if you’re using an Android Pie ROM, use this mod by joeyhaub instead:

Xiaomi Mi A2 Camera for Pie GSI: Pie_MiA2Cam_Magisk_Tissot_v3_INSTALL_IN_TWRP.zip

How to install Xiaomi Mi A2 camera on Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro

Before you consider this mod, you should note that:

The Mi A2 camera port for Redmi Note 5 Pro doesn’t work on MIUI-based ROMs.

Prerequisites:

TWRP custom recovery for Redmi Note 5 Pro

TWRP 3.2.3: twrp-3.2.3-0-whyred.img

Remove/uninstall Google Camera (if you have it on your Redmi Note 5 Pro, that is). It may cause some conflicts with the Mi A2 camera

Enable Camera2API

Flash this file using TWRP to enable Camera2API: Camera_2API.zip

Installation:

Download the Mi A2 camera for Redmi Note 5 Pro by carlosggb: MiA2Cam-v10.zip

Flash the camera mod using TWRP

Restart device

Possible bugs:

The Mi A2 camera may crash when you activate slow motion

HD (1080p) video lacks image stabilization

Auto HDR mode doesn’t work

You may see some lag when switching between the front and back camera

These aside, the Mi A2 camera produces beautiful shots.
