2. Install ADB drivers, if you haven’t done that previously.
3. Copy downloaded custom recovery .img file to the folder with ADB files and rename .img file to “recovery.img”.
4. In the folder with ADB files, press and hold “Shift” key and click right mouse button, in the menu select “Open command window here”.
5. Reboot your device in fastboot mode and connect to PC.
6. Type in the command window:

How to use TWRP Installer Tool?

1. First of all unlock the bootloader here http://en.miui.com/unlock
2. You should have Redmi 3S device with Android 6.0 installed.
3. Download TWRP Installer tool and unpack downloaded archive.
4. Start “twrp-installer.bat”.
5. Start your phone in fastboot mode and follow the instructions on the screen.
6. After installation is completed, your phone will automatically boot into TWRP Recovery. On the first startup you will see a confirmation message “Keep System Read Only?”:
   • If you select “Mount system partition read-only”, you can receive OTA updates for official MIUI ROMs.

How to install TWRP and flash Redmi 3S with locked bootloader

Before doing anything from this guide remember to make backup of your device. Make sure you’re completely understand on how to boot your Redmi 3S / 3X device in EDL and fastboot mode and you know how to use MiFlash. You take all responsibility for your actions!

So what’s the main point of this guide? Just to make things easier! Bypassing official MIUI unlocking is generally much easier than getting the official unlock. You don’t need to request and wait to get unlock permission and the process itself isn’t really complicated than the official unlock. The only thing is that you can’t reinstall TWRP version, that you will flash during this guide.

Required drivers for Redmi 3S and Redmi 3X

Basically all you need is to install the latest version of MiFlash. If you can’t install drivers for different modes, then you can try install them separately:

• EDL mode drivers for Redmi 3S: QDLoader+HS-USB+Driver_32-64bit_Setup.zip
• Fastboot drivers for Redmi 3S: Android_adb-USB_UnifL_Driver_v1.17.exe

How to enter EDL (download mode) on Redmi 3S and Redmi 3X

When you boot your Redmi 3S device in EDL mode device screen is rather black or turned off. There are two methods on how to boot in EDL mode:

• First way is to hold both volume buttons and connect your device to PC.
• If your device is in bootloop or hardbricked then try to hold all three buttons for a long time (around 60-90 seconds). First this will lead to reboot, you will get vibration signal, and then device reboot again, now it will be booted in EDL mode.
• Another way is to use fastboot mode. Boot your Redmi 3S in fastboot and then type “fastboot oem edl”. Your device will be identified as “Qualcomm HSUSB-Qloader 9008”.
• To exit EDL mode just hold the power button for a few seconds.

How to use fastboot mode on Redmi 3S and Redmi 3X

To boot into fastboot mode you need to hold down the volume button and press “Power” to turn your Redmi 3S device. In device manager your phone will be identified as “Android” or “Redmi3S”. You can use fastboot commands to reboot your device in different modes. If you press “Power” button for some time, your device will reboot back into the system.

How to use MiFlash to flash Redmi 3S device

Unpack downloaded ROM in any folder. For example “C:\rom”. In extracted MiFlash ROM version you’ll see “images” directory. Launch MiFlash tool, press “Browse” and select folder with ROM files. Then click “Refresh”, you’ll see COM port of your device. Select “flash all/clean all” mode. Don’t forget about backups! Press “Flash” to start flashing and wait until installation process is completed.

How to flash Xiaomi.EU ROM on locked bootloader

Follow these simple steps:

1. Download Xiaomi.EU 7.5.1 ROM version with pre-installed TWRP Custom Recovery.
2. Right after you’ve flashed this ROM via MiFlash, turn off your device, then enter the fastboot mode and run UNLOCK.bat from the archive with ROM files.
3. Congratulations! You’ve successfully flashed Xiaomi.EU 7.5.1 ROM with TWRP recovery on your locked Redmi 3S.

How to flash TWRP Custom Recovery on locked bootloader Redmi 3S

First you must enable the developer options and OEM-unlock in the settings. Then download and flash bootloader patch via MiFlash: RedMi3S_MiFlash_PatchLockedBL.zip (449.6 Kb).

Then boot your device in fastboot mode and execute these two files: doit1.bat and doit2.bat. Download here: RedMi3S_Fastboot_UnlockPatchedBL_specTWRP.zip (21.7 Mb). By doing this you’ll get device with custom TWRP installed. After this you can flash any custom ROMs (including OTA) without unlocking the bootloader on your Xiaomi Redmi 3s device.

Here’s additional information for you:

1. Go to “Settings” > “About device” and tap several times on MIUI version. Developer options will be enabled now. Open “Developer options” and enable OEM-Unlock.
2. Start your Redmi 3S in EDL mode.
3. Flash RedMi3S_MiFlash_PatchLockedBL.zip using MiFlash tool.
4. Turn off your device and start again in fastboot mode. Attention! You need to start your device in fastboot without booting into the system.
5. Unpack RedMi3S_Fastboot_UnlockPatchedBL_specTWRP.zip and run doit1.bat. Your phone will reboot, first startup will take around 10-15 minutes.
6. After the reboot, turn off the phone again, go to fastboot mode again and run doit2.bat.
7. TWRP Custom Recovery should start. Swipe to allow changes to system partition.
8. Now to flash any custom ROM connect your device to PC, download required ROM and copy to SD card or device internal memory. On the phone press “Install” and select downloaded ROM file.
9. With this TWRP version you can install other custom ROMS and upgrades without officially unlocking the bootloader.

How to root locked bootloader Redmi 3S

1. Download SuperSU Stable.
2. Reboot in patched TWRP version.
3. Install downloaded SuperSU.
4. Wipe “Dalvik” and “Cache”.

Before flashing any custom ROM on your device you must unlock bootloader on your device. Here’s a tutorial on how to unlock bootloader on Redmi 3S with official MIUI permission.

Unlock Bootloader on Redmi 3S / 3X with MiUnlock

To unlock your Xiaomi device you’ll need to have Mi-Account with approved unlock permission!

1. Sign in into your Mi account on your phone. Go to “Settings” > “Mi Account”.
2. Boot your device in fastboot mode; Turn off your device and press “Power” button with “Volume Down” at the same time. After short vibration signal release the power button and wait for fastboot logo to appear.
3. Next connect your device to PC.

7. Now in the main TWRP menu press “Install” and select ROM .zip file and add SuperSU in order in case you want to root your Redmi 3S device. Activate reboot after install. Wait until installation process is completed.
8. Congratulations! You’ve flashed custom ROM with root enabled.

How to update custom ROM on Redmi 3S

Allow to modify system partition in TWRP custom recovery.

1. Boot into TWRP custom recovery.
2. Wipe required partitions. If you’re updating the same ROM, you can only wipe “Cache”. If you’re flashing custom ROM from another developer than you should wipe each partition except MicroSD and OTG.
3. Download custom ROM you want to flash or update.
4. Connect your Redmi 3S device to PC or laptop and copy custom ROM .zip archive and SuperSU Stable (copy SuperSU if you want to root your device) to MicroSD card. Disconnect your device from PC.
5. “Reboot” > “Recovery”;
6. Now in the main TWRP menu press “Install” and select ROM .zip file and SuperSU. Activate reboot after install. Wait until installation process is completed.

Solution for Redmi 3S / 3X can’t boot in TWRP custom recovery mode

The issue with device can’t boot in TWRP recovery is related to bugged emmc_appsboot.mbn file from MIUI aboot partition. This problem usually appears on some previous ROM versions. After emmc_appsboot.mbn file is being written, your device won’t be able to boot in TWRP recovery mode anymore. That means no more updates & backups. However, do not get frustrated. The solution is very simple.

Fix TWRP recovery on Redmi 3S and Redmi 3X device

1. Download emmc_appsboot from CM13 zwliew version – 1.img
   
2. Copy this file in phone internal memory.
3. In terminal app (download link below) run this command:

   su
   dd if=/sdcard/1.img of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/aboot
   reboot recovery

4. Now TWRP recovery will be working.

Another method: In case of Redmi 3S Bootloop

Here’s another method on how to restore TWRP recovery using fastboot mode on your Redmi 3S or Redmi 3X device, in case of bootloop or if previous method didn’t worked for you.

1. Make sure you’ve installed all required fastboot drivers.
2. Download and extract this patch: Fix_TWRP_via_fastboot.zip
   1. In case of bootloop: Press and hold “Power” button with “Volume down” button for 15 seconds and after short vibration signal release the “Power” button.
   2. If you don’t have bootloop: Turn off your device > Hold “Volume down” and “Power” buttons.
3. Connect your device to PC.
4. Wait until all drivers are installed.
5. Run “1 Run me.bat” file. After successful patching you should see “OKAY. finished” message.
6. Disconnect your device from PC.
7. Now press and hold both volume buttons and power button for 15 seconds.
8. After vibration signal release the power button, while keep holding both volume buttons.
9. You’ve successfully boot into TWRP recovery.

Solution for not found dummy.bin on Redmi 3S and Redmi 3X – Flashing with MiFlash

1. Find rawprogram0.xml in “images” folder (images folder is located in extracted ROM folder) and open this file with Notepad, Notepad++ or any other text editing software.
2. Search for the line with “dummy.bin”. Should look like this:
3. Now delete the part with “dummy.bin”. Now the file will look like this:
4. Save the changes and try to flash again

This bug appears on Global Developer 6.11.10 ROM version and previous versions also, but solution is pretty simple.

Restoring lost IMEI on Xiaomi Redmi 3S / 3X

1. Remove SIM cards and connect your device to PC.
2. Important! Make backup using QPST tool. (Read our full guide about QPST backup here.)
3. After successful IMEI backup keep QPST opened, since we will need it later.
4. Find your original IMEI codes on the box (one should be written on the back side of the box and another one on the sticker that was originally pasted on backside of your device).
5. Start IMEI Converter.
6. In the left field enter your original IMEI and press “Convert”. Copy and save the converted code somewhere, we will need it later. Repeat the same steps for the second IMEI code. Close IMEI Converter since it won’t be needed anymore.
7. Now download and install Hex Workshop. With Hex Workshop open 000000_0.qcn file (download link below). Press “ctrl+f” and search for this line: “08 8A 16 11 02 33 44 55 67”.
8. Now replace “08 8A 16 11 02 33 44 55 67” with previously converted IMEI 1.
9. Next search for “08 8A 16 11 02 33 44 55 66” and then replace it with previously converted IMEI 2.
10. Close Hex Workshop. On the questions: Save changes to 000000_0.qcn? – Press “Yes”. Would you like to make a backup of 000000_0.qcn? – Press “No”.
11. Now get back to QPST tool (previously, we made our backup here). But this time we select “Restore” and choose our 000000_0.qcn file with changed IMEI.
    1. Read our full guide about QPST backup here.
    2. To restore: in QPST press Start Clients and Software Download.
    3. Now open Backup tab and select 000000_0.qcn file with previously changed IMEI.
12. Press “Start” and wait for 3-5 minutes.
13. After the process is finished disconnect your device from PC.
14. Reboot your device, insert your SIM card and rejoice working IMEI.

1. Turn off your device
2. Press “Volume -” button and power button at the same time. Hold it until start of your device. You should see “Fastboot” with Xiaomi logo.
3. Connect your Xiaomi Redmi 3S / 3X device to PC using USB.
4. Download platform-tools_r24.4.1-windows.zip – 974 KB
5. Unzip and run “edl.cmd”
6. That’s all!
